Oerath

Oerath is a typical street village and is located a few kilometers away in the northwest of the city of Erkelenz in the so-called Erkelenzer Land in North Rhine-Westphalia . Today a bypass road leads around the village on the east side, it runs from Erkelenz to Wegberg .

history

The first mention of this place comes from the year 1309, when Oerath was still called "Udenraide". The village has only borne the name "Oerath" since the middle of the fifteenth century, when the language change from Udenraide to "Oerode" and later Oerath took place around 1460 .

The Aachen Marienstift owned property here .

Oerath is one of the villages that has always belonged to the city of Erkelenz.

Place names

The basic word -rath in the place name indicates that the settlement was founded in the medieval clearing phase . The qualifier contains the personal name Odo , Udo .

The chapel

Oerath is in the district of the Catholic parish St. Lambertus Erkelenz.

A chapel was built in the village in 1931 and expanded between 1949 and 1954. The altar , cross and ambo were designed by the Erkelenz artist Haak, 13 colored windows are available. The chapel has 90 seats.

economy

The place is strongly influenced by a multitude of small farming in plants which increasingly move from the pure livestock farming. Cereals and sugar beets are particularly grown here. In recent years there has been a sharp decline in small farms.

The medlar tree tour runs through the village, it connects all the Erkelenz villages that belonged to the Duchy of Geldern .

Others

Today's Burgstrasse and Roermonder Strasse in Erkelenz were formerly called Oerather Strasse. It was named that way as early as 1467.

From the Middle Ages to the 19th century, the Oerather Mühle, a windmill, was located between the village and the town . Later it was canceled. Today there is a restaurant that continues the name.

The newest building area in the city of Erkelenz bears the name “Oerather Mühlenfeld”, but has neither a structural connection nor any other reference to the village.
