Location of Kückhoven in North Rhine-Westphalia

Kückhoven, Catholic Church

Kückhoven is an incorporated district of Erkelenz in the Heinsberg district in North Rhine-Westphalia and is located in the Jülich-Zülpicher Börde . The residents of the neighboring towns gave the Kückhovener the local name "De Japstöck".

geography

location

Kückhoven borders in the north on Wockerath , in the northeast on Berverath , in the east on Holzweiler , in the south on Katzem and in the west on Neu-Immerath and Bellinghoven .

The village is around three kilometers southeast of Erkelenz. A bypass road leads around the village in the east, past Holzweiler and Immerath to the municipality of Titz . The road to Katzem leads through the village .

Garzweiler opencast lignite mine

Since 2006/07 the resettlement place Neu-Immerath has been built southwest of Kückhoven. The village of Immerath is being displaced from its old location by the Garzweiler open- cast lignite mine . As early as 2005, some families from Pesch moved to Kückhoven.

Originally, Kückhoven was also supposed to be excavated, but due to the resistance of the population, the planned mining area of the opencast mine was reduced. In the future, Kückhoven will initially be located directly on the opencast mine and later on a lake, as the remaining hole will be filled with water after the end of the brown coal mining .

history

Neolithic remains of a well

Around 5100 BC In the area of today's gravel pit next to Lahey Park , people of the linear ceramic culture settled . In 1990 a wooden well was discovered in the Neolithic settlement. This represents one of the oldest preserved wooden structures in the world. Parts of the fountain are exhibited in a climatic chamber in the LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn .

The ending of the place name in -inghoven indicates that Kückhoven was founded at the time of the late Merovingians or early Carolingians . Kückhoven was first mentioned in a document in 1309 as Kudichoven . In the Middle Ages and in the early modern period , Kückhoven was part of the "Glory of Erkelenz".

From 1794, the rural community of Kückhoven formed a joint community with the town of Erkelenz . In 1851 Kückhoven was released from this joint municipality and now formed an independent municipality, the area of which was 718 hectares 73 ares.

On February 26, 1945, Kückhoven was captured by American soldiers of the 102nd Infantry Division of the 9th US Army in the course of Operation Grenade .

On January 1, 1972, the municipality of Kückhoven was dissolved in the course of municipal reform and the city of Erkelenz was added.

archeology

Archaeological finds around Kückhoven substantiate large parts of the documentary and literary evidence. The following original find from Kückhoven is considered to be of local historical value:

  • (Silver) Denarius COLOGNE. Otto I. , 936-973. This denarius is part of the first documentary mention of Erkelenz in the year 966 AD.

These small finds testify to trade and economy:

  • a coin weight; probably 18th century for weighing Reichsthalers ,
  • the lid of a bowl weight with the stamped date: 1747.

Furthermore, there are coins and weights from several centuries as originals.

religion

The majority of the village is Catholic . In 1340 the place was raised to a parish, until then Kückhoven had belonged to the parish of Erkelenz. The church is dedicated to St. Servatius . The church building is a baroque cross-shaped hall church and has a baroque altar. The choir stalls probably come from the Hohenbusch monastery . The west tower is late Gothic and dates from 1460.

On January 1st, 2010 the parish was merged with ten other parishes to form the parish of St. Maria and Elisabeth Erkelenz.
