Golkrath is a village in the urban area of Erkelenz in the Heinsberg district in North Rhine-Westphalia . The village is located west of Erkelenz on the border with the city of Hückelhoven . Golkrath has 975 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2006). The neighboring village of Hoven is closely connected to Golkrath , which is why it is also presented in this article.

There are coal-bearing layers at a depth of 550 m. The Sophia-Jacoba colliery wanted to dismantle it and therefore built a fresh air shaft between Golkrath and Matzerath from 1983 to 1986 using the freezing process . However, this was not used due to the later mine closure.

Waters

The Golkrath Bach begins its course in a valley in the middle of the village, flows in a south-westerly direction to Kleingladbach and finally flows into the Rur at Millich .

The place is a street village , the street forks in the middle of the village and follows the Golkrath Bach on both sides. In the 19th century, there was still a pond called a maar on the current site of the memorial behind the church .

history

Golkrath was first mentioned in a document in 1118. Count Gerhard II. (Geldern) gave the Wassenberg Church an allod , a Gollekerothe property . The place name was in 1468 Golkenrade and 1648 Golkradt written. The name ending indicates that it is a settlement that was created in the high medieval clearing phase .

In 1118 Golkrath belonged to the Wassenberg rule . In 1494 this territory came to the Duchy of Jülich . From now until 1794 Golkrath was in the Jülich court of Kleingladbach and in the Wassenberg district.

During the French occupation from 1794 to 1814, Golkrath was assigned to Mairie Kleingladbach in the canton of Erkelenz.

From 1815 under Prussian rule, the village remained in the mayor's office of Kleingladbach in the district of Erkelenz . From 1817 to 1851 the administrative seat was in Golkrath.

On October 1, 1935, Golkrath became the seat of the municipality of Golkrath, which also included the villages of Houverath, Houverather Heide, Hoven and Matzerath. This community belonged to the office of Erkelenz-Land.

American soldiers of the 335th Regiment of the 84th Infantry Division of the 9th US Army took Golkrath on February 26, 1945 during Operation Grenade after crossing the Rur.

On January 1, 1972, the community was dissolved and incorporated into the city of Erkelenz.

The majority of the population is Catholic. For centuries the place was in the parish of Kleingladbach. A small chapel was built around 1705 . A new, larger chapel was built in 1810 and enlarged in 1826.

In 1851 the independent parish of Golkrath was founded. In 1896 the construction of St. Stephen's Church began. On January 1, 1945, the choir was hit by an enemy shell. On February 25, 1945, the day before the American army took it, the church was blown up by the German Wehrmacht . Reconstruction began in 1949 and the inauguration took place on October 21, 1951. The church tower was completed a year later.

After the Second World War , the Schovenbergs set up a foundation to set up a monastery for the Dominican sisters from Ilanz . In 1950 they settled in Golkrath in the St. Josef Monastery, first built a kindergarten and in 1964 a home for the elderly. However, the monastery and the old people's home were closed in 2006. The kindergarten still exists.

Personalities

  • Albertine Steinacker (born October 16, 1855; † April 15, 1923) was a teacher at the Golkrath elementary school from 1877 to 1920. Steinackerstrasse is named after her.
  • Hermann Joseph Robert Hortmanns (born June 9, 1884, † February 20, 1950) had been pastor in Golkrath since 1924. In 1941 he and ten priests were arrested by the Gestapo for listening to an enemy radio station. He was convicted but was released in 1942 after an appeal hearing.

Hoven

Hoven ( 51 ° 5 ′  N , 6 ° 16 ′  E ) is a small street village and is located northeast of Golkrath. The road to Schwanenberg runs through the village . Hoven is known nationwide for its cycling club "Viktoria". The place has 85 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2006).

The population is half Catholic and half Protestant. The Catholics belong to the parish of Golkrath, the Evangelicals to the parish of Schwanenberg. Cycling club Viktoria Hoven

The Viktoria Hoven cycling club was founded in 1921. Since the turn of the century, numerous such cycling clubs had formed in the Erkelenzer Land. They practiced art and dance driving. Of all these clubs, only the club in Hoven and Tenholt remained after the Second World War . In the meantime Viktoria Hoven is the only club that still operates artificial cycling . In the last few decades the club has won numerous championships at national level in four-man artificial cycling and six-man artificial cycling .
