Tenholt is a village in the urban area of Erkelenz ( Heinsberg district ) in North Rhine-Westphalia .

geography

Tenholt is located on the southern edge of the Erkelenzer Börde . The Baaler Riedelland begins south of the village .

location

Tenholt is about three kilometers south of the city center of Erkelenz. The Autobahn 46 and the Commerden Commercial and Industrial Park (GIPCO) lie between the town center and the village . In the east, the Aachen-Düsseldorf railway line runs directly past Tenholt in an artificial cut in the terrain. A railway bridge connects the place with some of the residential buildings outside. Adjacent to this is the Wahnenbusch , with 25 hectares the largest forest area in the city. Other villages in the town of Erkelenz around Tenholt are Bellinghoven in the northeast , Immerath (new) in the east, Lövenich in the south , and Granterath with Genehen in the west .

Type of settlement

Tenholt is a rural village . The village extends in a north-south direction around the village of Anger . Today there are orchards, festival meadows, a playground, an open shelter , a well, a water pump, a pond and a church.

The place name Tenholt means at the forest or to the forest .

history

Tenholt was founded as one of the last settlements in the Erkelenzer Land. The place name indicates that this happened at the time of the second clearing phase in the 12th to 13th centuries, also known as the expansion period.

The settlement was first mentioned in a document in 1309.

Tenholt has belonged to the city of Erkelenz since the Middle Ages.

On February 26, 1945, the village was taken by American soldiers of the 102nd Infantry Division of the 9th US Army in the course of Operation Grenade .

The population is predominantly Catholic . A chapel has survived from 1605 . This was consecrated to St. Anthony . In 1863 a new chapel building was built. In 1898 a rectory was built. In 1901 the independent chapel congregation, the Tenholt Rectorate, was established. Until then, the place had always belonged to the parish of Erkelenz. In 1903 a cemetery was donated to the parish.

On January 1st, 2010 Tenholt became part of the parish of St. Maria and Elisabeth Erkelenz, which has been part of the Christkönig Erkelenz parish since 2015, which covers the entire city area.

The restaurant Zum Kuhstall is located with its outdoor terrace directly on the village green. The village has a nursery, a plumbing and heating company, an electrical installation company, a horse farm with riding stable and only one full-time farm .

A cycle path leads from Tenholt to Erkelenz. The village is integrated into the cycle path network of North Rhine-Westphalia . Bicycle tourism professionals will find a junction on the village green . The medlar tree tour runs through the village, it connects all the Erkelenz villages that belonged to the Duchy of Geldern .

Village archive

The extensive village archive was created by the local history researcher and director of studies Therese Frauenrath (1921–2007) and is now in the Erkelenz city archive. In 1990 she was awarded the Rheinlandtaler for her commitment .

Personalities

  • Adolf Horion (* July 12, 1888 in Hochneukirch; † May 28, 1977 in Überlingen), an important coleopterologist ( beetle researcher ) was pastor in Tenholt from 1923 to 1929. In the neighboring Wahnenbusch he found the first beetles for his extensive collection.
