history

The name Kleingladbach comes from a watercourse, the Gladbach . The oldest building is the parish church of St. Stephen (15th / 16th century).

Kleingladbach once belonged to the Wassenberg office in the Duchy of Jülich and had its own jurisdiction. Eschenbroich, Brück, Golkrath , Horst, Houverath and Matzerath belonged to the Kleingladbach court .

From 1798 Kleingladbach belonged to the canton of Erkelenz as Mairie . Since 1815 the place was an independent mayor's office in the district of Erkelenz . The administrative seat was in Matzerath from 1815 to 1817 and in Golkrath from 1817 to 1851. It was only from the latter date that he came to Kleingladbach.

In 1935 Kleingladbach was attached to the then Hückelhoven community.

societies

The place achieved short-term fame through the football club "Viktoria Kleingladbach". As the smallest club, it took part in the first main round of the DFB Cup in 1978 and lost 4-0 to ESV Ingolstadt-Ringsee . Kleingladbach was therefore presented in the ZDF's current sports studio .
