St. Martinus is the Roman Catholic chapel of the Borschemich (new) district of Erkelenz in the district of Heinsberg , North Rhine-Westphalia .

The building belongs to the large parish Christkönig in Erkelenz.

history

Since Borschemich has to give way to the Garzweiler opencast mine by 2017 and thus also the St. Martinus Church , which was profaned on November 23, 2014, a replacement building at the resettlement site was necessary. According to the wishes of the Aachen diocese, this should no longer have a church, but a much smaller chapel. Thus, the Monschau architect Elmar Paul Sommer was commissioned to plan a new chapel with an adjoining community center for Borschemich (new). The groundbreaking ceremony was in December 2013 and the foundation stone was laid on June 22, 2014. The consecration of the new church took place on May 3, 2015 by the Aachen auxiliary bishop Johannes Bündgens . The tower clock and the tower cross with the weathercock were taken from the old church.

Furnishing

In the interior there are some pieces of equipment from the old Borschemich church. Of these, the neo-Gothic high altar , as well as some figures of saints, the baptismal font , the triumphal cross , as well as the baroque communion bench and the foundation stone of the old Borschemich church are to be mentioned. The wooden folk altar was also taken over from Borschemich, but it had to be reduced in size. The ambo was made from the altar boys' seats in the old church. The organ is a work of the company Orgelbau Romanus Seifert & Sohn from Kevelaer and was before the installation in Borschemich (new) in a community center of the parish of St. Remigius Viersen . It has ten registers distributed over a manual and pedal . Also from the former church of St. Martin in Borschemich individual were stained glass windows of Maria Katz Gray in the new chapel translocated .

Bells

The four bells were also taken over from the Borschemich church.
