Alfonso Liguori Morapeli

Alfonso Liguori Morapeli OMI (born May 25, 1929 in Ha Motebang , today Mokhotlong district , † May 17, 1989 ; according to other information Alphonse Morapeli or Alphonsus Morapeli ) was Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Maseru .

Life

Alfonso Liguori Morapeli joined the Order of the Oblates (OMI) and was ordained a priest on December 14, 1958 .

Pope Paul VI appointed him in 1967 in place of the late Emanuel 'Mabathoana as Archbishop of Maseru. He received his episcopal ordination on June 29, 1967, the Archbishop of Cape Town , Cardinal Owen McCann ; Co - consecrators were Joseph-Delphis Desrosiers OMI, Bishop of Qacha's Nek , and Ignatius Phakoe OMI, Bishop of Leribe .

From 1968 to 1970 he also served as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Leribe before he was replaced by Bishop Paul Khoarai . 1972 to 1982 he was chairman of the Bishops 'Conference of Lesotho (Lesotho Catholic Bishops' Conference, LCBC). During his tenure, he campaigned for a balance between the government and the opposition and managed to bring home many members of the opposition from exile. The visit of Pope John Paul II , the first visit by a Pope to Lesotho, also fell during his term of office.

Morapeli died in office in 1989.
