The Archdiocese of Maseru ( Latin Archidioecesis Maseruena ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in Maseru in Lesotho .

history

The forerunner of today's diocese is that by Pope Leo XIII. the Apostolic Prefecture of Basutoland founded on May 8, 1894 as a result of cession of territory from the Apostolic Vicariate of Kimberley in Orange ; he subordinated the administration of the prefecture to the religious community of the Oblates . On February 18, 1909, Pope Pius X was renamed the Apostolic Vicariate Basutoland and on January 11, 1951, Pope Pius XII raised it to a diocese . Through Pope John XXIII. the foundation of today's archbishopric took place in 1961.

The suffragan dioceses in Leribe (1952), Qacha's Nek (1961) and Mohale's Hoek (1977) are assigned to the Archdiocese of Maseru .
