Emanuel 'Mabathoana
Emanuel Gregory 'Mabathoana OMI (born December 29, 1904 in Mokhokhong near Roma , Basutoland ; † September 20, 1966 ; according to other information Emmanuel' Mabathoana ) was the first archbishop of the Archdiocese of Maseru . He also emerged as a linguist .
Life
Emanuel 'Mabathoana was born near Roma. His mother was a granddaughter of the former ruler Moshoeshoe I. 'Mabathonana began his studies under the Marist Fathers at St. Joseph Training College and continued them from 1924 at St. Theresa's Seminary in Roma, where he joined the Order of the Oblates (OMI) . On June 28, 1934 he was the second Mosotho to be ordained a priest . From 1934 to 1944 he taught as a professor at the Minor Seminary and the Major Seminary in Roma, before working as a lecturer in Bantu languages at Pius XII College for eight years . From 1950 to 1951 he studied African linguistics in Rome and London .
In 1953 he was elected Bishop of Leribe . In 1956 he was a member of the Spelling Committee of the Basutoland National Council and successfully campaigned for the retention of the independent spelling of Sesotho in Basutoland. The episcopal ordination donated to him on March 25, 1961 the previous bishop of Maseru , Joseph-Delphis Desrosiers OMI; Co- consecrators were William Patrick Whelan OMI, Bishop of Johannesburg , and Peter Kelleter CSSp , Bishop of Bethlehem .
'Mabathoana died in 1966 on a flight from Maseru to Pretoria , where he was going to attend a meeting.
Honors
A secondary school in Maseru is called 'Mabathoana High School' after him .
