Bernard Mohlalisi

Bernard Mosiuoa Mohlalisi OMI (born March 16, 1933 in Ha Malijeng , Kingdom of Lesotho ; † July 24, 2020 in Mazenod , ibid) was a Lesothic religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Maseru . He was President of the Lesotho Bishops' Conference from 1997 to 2002.

Life

Bernard Mohlalisi joined the Order of the Oblates (OMI) in 1955 , made his first profession on January 6, 1956, and made perpetual profession three years later . He was ordained deacon on May 28, 1963 , before the Archbishop of Maseru, Emanuel 'Mabathoana OMI, ordained a priest on July 14, 1963 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Maseru on June 11, 1990 . He was ordained bishop by the Apostolic Delegate in South Africa and Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Lesotho, Archbishop Ambrose Battista De Paoli , on October 7th of the same year; Co- consecrators were Paul Khoarai , Bishop of Leribe , and Hubert Bucher , Bishop of Bethlehem . When Lesotho became the first African country to start the UVCT (Universal Voluntary HIV / AIDS Counseling and Testing) program in 2004, the then Bishop of the capital Maseru, Bernard Mohlalisi, and the then President Bethuel Pakalitha Mosisili , were the first two to take the test and asked the population to follow them.
