Ambrose Battista De Paoli

Ambrose Battista De Paoli (born August 19, 1934 in Jeanette , Pennsylvania , USA ; † October 10, 2007 in Miami , Florida ) was a Vatican diplomat and most recently Apostolic Nuncio in Australia .

Life

Ambrose Battista De Paoli was ordained a priest on December 18, 1960 in Miami. From 1964 to 1966 he graduated from the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy and obtained his doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Lateran University with a dissertation submitted in 1965 on the subject of Property laws of the State of Florida affecting the Church . In 1966 he entered the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See . He has served in papal missions in Zambia , Venezuela , Canada and in the Vatican State Secretariat . On April 11, 1967, Pope Paul VI awarded him . the title of Honorary Chaplain to His Holiness ( Monsignor ).

Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness on February 7, 1980 and appointed him Titular Archbishop of Lares and Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Sri Lanka on September 23, 1983 . He received his episcopal ordination from Agostino Cardinal Casaroli .

In the following years he was Apostolic Delegate , from 1994 Nuncio, in South Africa (1988–1997), Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Lesotho (1988–1997), Apostolic Nuncio in Swaziland (1993–1997), Apostolic Delegate, from 1996 Nuncio, in Namibia (1994–1997) and Apostolic Delegate in Botswana (1994–1997). From 1997 to 2004 he was nuncio in Japan , since 2004 apostolic nuncio in Australia .

De Paoli died of complications from leukemia diagnosed in 2005 in a Miami hospital.
