The Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary is a 1,954 acres (7.9 square kilometers ) wide reserve in Topsfield in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is administered by the Massachusetts Audubon Society .
Protected area
The sanctuary is the largest of the Massachusetts Audubon Society and includes forests, green spaces, and wetlands . Central features of the landscape are a drumlin and an os , which were formed by a glacier 15,000 years ago . A total of 12 mi (19.3 km ) of hiking trails are available to visitors. Through the reserve flows for a distance of 8 mi (12.9 km) of the eponymous Ipswich River , which with canoes can be driven. Toads ( Anaxyrus americanus ), American marsh frogs , North American river otters , beavers , ornamental turtles , great blue herons , red-throated warblers and marsh swallows are particularly common .
