The Marian column is the name given to statues of Our Lady that stand on a column or a pedestal.

Some Marian columns, such as the Marian column in Freising , are several centuries old; Probably the oldest example was inaugurated in Munich in 1638 and served as a model for the conception of many later Marian monuments of this type right down to the design details. In the second half of the 19th century, Marian devotion received a new impetus when Pope Pius IX. raised the centuries-old belief in the immaculate conception of Mary (preservation of Mary from original sin) to a dogma (bull “ Ineffabilis Deus ”: Mary was “preserved from birth unsullied from all hereditary debt”). As a result, Marian columns were erected in many public places, e.g. B. the Marian columns in Trier and Pasing .

The size of the Marian pillars ranges from a few meters in the case of pillars in the inner city area to stately heights in those that are set in the landscape as solitaires that can be seen from afar (e.g. the Trier Marian Column with a height of around 40 meters).

The Prague Marian Column in the old town was erected as the 4th Marian Column in Europe in 1650. The occasion was the gratitude to St. Mary for saving Prague from the Swedish troops at the end of the Thirty Years' War .

In Spain , “ Our Lady on the Pillar ” is venerated as the patron saint , in whose honor the largest baroque church in Spain was built in Saragossa . The veneration goes back to a traditional apparition of St. Mary in the year 40 AD. Here she is said to have appeared on a pillar to the Apostle James the Elder .

Our Lady is often shown on Marian pillars in one of three positions: she carries the baby Jesus, prays or makes a gesture of blessing .

Bad Reichenhall , Marian column in front of the Nonner Kircherl	The bronze statue, which stands on a base made of Untersberg marble , was designed by Paul Sayer and was cast by Ferdinand von Miller in 1895 . It is located in front of the entrance to the cemetery at the St. Georg branch church and is - together with the church - registered as an architectural monument in the Bavarian list of monuments.
Berlin-Kreuzberg , Marian column in front of the St. Marien-Liebfrauenkirche	Neo-Romanesque lion fountain with Marian column from 1906 in the forecourt of the church on Wrangelstrasse. After the figures were lost in the war since December 2007 with a new Madonna and fountain lions made of sandstone by sculptor Christian Schafflhuber.
Bolzano , in Italy	The Marian column from 1909 is by the sculptor Andreas Kompatscher . It is a column with a Corinthian capital. On it the statue of Our Lady.
Chodov , in the Czech Republic	The Marian column from 1675 was erected by Johann Wilhelm von Plankenheim on the road to Loket . Today, after restoration in 2013, it stands in the city center on Staroměstská Street. It is a richly decorated sandstone column on a pedestal closed with a powerful cornice. A bareheaded statue of the Virgin Mary stands on it, her head tilted slightly back, her hands clasped in prayer.
Duderstadt im Eichsfeld , Gropenmarkt / Marktstrasse	The tall, baroque Marian column was built in 1711 on the initiative of the parish priest Herwig Böning (1666–1722). On their eastern plinth, the two leopards from the Duderstadt city arms are carved under a D in local sandstone. The western base field shows the Mainz wheel with the crosier and sword. (Duderstadt and Eichsfeld belonged to the Archbishopric of Mainz from Christianization until the beginning of the 19th century. The Archbishop of Mainz was also secular head here for about 450 years.) The column is the northernmost representation of its kind in Germany before the historicism of the 19th and 20th centuries Century.
Düsseldorf , Maxplatz	Neo-Romanesque column with a statue of the Virgin Mary on its top. It stands on a pedestal in a small garden on Maxplatz.

Freising, Marienplatz	A red marble column crowned by a figure of Mary , donated by Prince-Bishop Albrecht Sigismund in 1674 for the veneration of Mary as Patrona Bavariae .
Fulda , East Hesse	In the years 1348 and 1450 the Europe-wide plague also raged in Fulda, where it claimed around three thousand victims. The plague or Marian column was erected on the 300th anniversary of the plague of 1348 and 1350 in 1651 on the Frauenberg. In the north of the old town of Fulda, the street Am Frauenberg leads up to the monastery of the same name . To the left of the street, in the green space, is the monument, a slim, figure-crowned column on a square base, standing on a wide square pedestal. Of the four faces of the center piece are provided with inscriptions three, the Southern, the city-facing side bears the arms of the Prince Abbot Joachim Graf von Gravenegg (1644-1671). The Marien or plague column is said to have been built on the site of the last plague death. ... At the foot of it still rises a pillar today, which is supposed to remind us that when a plague raged here and old and young were swept away by it, the bishop of Fulda made a pilgrimage from the cathedral to the Frauenberge hired. But when the believers, the Venerabile in front, went to the place of pilgrimage, singing and praying, one of them fell to the ground, caught by the disease, and died as the last victim of it. In memory of this, the column was erected there and every year on the day of grace the pious people of Fulda went to the monastery to pray there.

Holzheim	The landmark in the center of Holzheim is the Marian column with a war memorial for the participants in the Franco-Prussian War 1870/71 from the former communities of Holzheim, Bergendorf , Oberpeiching , Pessenburgheim , Riedheim , Stadel , Unterbaar and Wallerdorf . The monument was inaugurated on May 21, 1872 and is entered in the Bavarian list of monuments.
Kirchdorf an der Amper	The column was erected in 1911 and commemorates those who died in the Franco-German War of 1870/71.
Cluj-Napoca (Klausenburg) , Romania	Erected in 1744 at the Jesuit Church, created by the sculptor Anton Schuchbauer.
Cologne	Oldest Rhenish Marian column in neo-Gothic style, completed in 1858.

Lehenbühl , part of Legau	The Marian column in Lehenbühl was donated in 1632 and renewed in 1839. The Tuscan column rests on a cuboid base.

Oelsnitz / Erzgeb.	The Marian column from 2015 was part of the State Garden Show Oelsnitz / Erzgeb. Inaugurated in 2015 . It was designed by the artist Klaus Hirsch . The simple sandstone column stands on a square base. The massive black marble capital is decorated with gilded stylized roses. The statue of Mary, a bareheaded statue of the Virgin Mary, head tilted slightly back, with hands clasped in prayer, is a replica of the statue of Mary in Chodov , the twin town of Oelsnitz in the Ore Mountains.
Ochsenhausen	Marian column of the Ochsenhausen monastery from 1717
Pinkafeld	The Marian column is located on the market square of the Burgenland town of Pinkafeld . It was first mentioned in a document in the canonical visitation of 1757. Historians date its emergence around 1700, on the occasion of the end of the Great Turkish War and the associated final defense against the threat that the campaigns of the Ottoman Empire posed for the Habsburg monarchy .
Prague in the Czech Republic	The Marian column in front of the Old Town Hall was destroyed in 1918. In 2020 the city council decided to erect a replica at the old location.
Racibórz in Poland	Late baroque sandstone statue from the 18th century.
Salzburg in Austria , on Domplatz	The plant was built by Wolfgang and Johann Baptist Hagenauer from 1766 to 1771. A high plinth carries the figure of Maria Immaculata, who stands on a cloud mountain with a globe.
Rimbach , on Lindenstrasse	It was built in the second half of the 19th century and made of sandstone.
trier	The total height of the structure is 40.9 m. Built in the 19th century, renovated in spring 2007.

Weiz in Austria	Marian column from 1682 with the figure of the Immaculate by P. Reschve from 1904. In 1974 the monument was moved to its current location.
Again	Erected in 1901, renovated in 1934, the figure was renewed in 1955.
Vienna , in Austria at the Am Hof square	Today the Marian column stands in the middle of the Am Hof square. A balustrade runs on a three-level system, the base is exactly modeled on that of the stone column. On the pedestal stands another pedestal, on it stands a Corinthian order made of ore, at the very top is the statue of Mary.
Marian column in Wiener Neustadt	The weddings of the Duchesses Eleonora Marie Josefa with Charles V of Lorraine and Maria Anna Josefa with Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz were used by the Wiener Neustädter Bishop Leopold Karl von Kollonitsch as an opportunity to donate a Marian Column in memory in 1678. Bishop Kollonitsch consecrated the Marian Column on August 15, 1679 on the feast of the Assumption of Mary.
Wiesentheid , on Marienplatz	The column was erected in 1859 by Carl Alexander Heideloff and forms the center of the square named after it
Kłodzko in Poland	late baroque statue made of sandstone. It was built in the 17th century and stands on the west side of the ring.
Rottenbuch	Marian column made of sandstone, originally part of a fountain, converted into a war memorial in 1873 after the Franco-German War.
