Gilching from the north

Gilching is the northernmost and with more than 19,000 inhabitants the third largest municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Starnberg . The place of the same name is located about twenty kilometers from Munich .

geography

The community lies in the moraine landscape of the foothills of the Alps on the edge of the Fünfseenland .

There are eleven officially named districts (the type of settlement is given in brackets ):

Origin of name

The name is derived from Old High German. When the Germanic-Bavarian successors of the Romans settled the Gilchinger area in the 6th century, they called their place Kiltoahinga (according to the oldest evidence in the early 9th century), which is derived from a personal name such as Geldiko (probably named after an elder of the clan). The name changed over the centuries from Kiltoahinga to today's place name Gilching .

history

The listed parish church of St. Vitus

Until the church is planted

Around 450 BC The region was settled by the Celtic people of the Vindeliker . The village of Gilching is mentioned for the first time in a document and can thus be proven in writing in a deed of donation from the year 804, namely as "Kiltoahinga". According to the text of the deed, Reginhart, authorized representative and administrator of the royal property, hands over his properties in the towns of Pettenbach and Glonn to the "Slechdorf" monastery, now Schlehdorf . This donation was made on September 4th, 804, negotiated in the royal village of Kiltoahinga in the fourth year of the reign of Emperor Charles .

Gilching later belonged to the Munich Rent Office and to the Starnberg Regional Court of the Electorate of Bavaria . In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria , today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

Incorporations

On May 1, 1978, the previously independent municipality Argelsried was incorporated.

Population development

Between 1988 and 2018 the municipality grew from 13,421 to 18,993 by 5,572 inhabitants or by 41.5%.

politics

Village leader, mayor and mayor before 1945

The records of the community leaders and mayors before 1945 are sketchy and incomplete. The earliest currently known record goes back to 1808. The source for this is Peter Iohn's "Landscape and Village History of the Community of Gilching and Surroundings" from 1975. Around 1808 the first man in the village still called himself a village leader, from 1850 a headmaster. In 1869, with the election of Johann Schneider, the mayor was the first to speak.

First mayor after the Second World War

After the Second World War, Gilching had seven First Mayors so far. Immediately after the war, Johann Simon ( CSU ) took over the office of mayor. He was used provisionally by the American occupation until the first election, which took place on January 27, 1946. Simon was elected 1st Mayor. From 1948 to 1956 Josef Bartl ( SPD ) headed the official business. In 1956, Johann Krammer ( non-partisan voter group - ÜP ) was his successor, who led the community for a total of 16 years before he was replaced by Heinrich Will ( CSU ) in 1972 . With a total of 18 years in office, Will is the record holder to this day. In 1990 the hitherto largely unknown Hans Ostermair (citizenry) surprisingly replaced Heinrich Will. In 1991 Ostermair joined the Free Voters ( FW ), who were to hold the office of mayor without interruption until 2008. In 1996 Thomas Reich succeeded Ostermair, who had decided to run for the office of district administrator, but was unsuccessful. In 2002, Reich was re-elected with a large majority in the first ballot and ran again in 2008. In the first ballot, however, he failed with 25% of the vote. The decisive factor for this was probably his commitment to increasing the use of Oberpfaffenhofen Airport. In the runoff election on March 16, 2008, which then became necessary, Manfred Walter (SPD) prevailed against Michael Hauser from the CSU with around 58.6% of the vote, Hauser received 41.4%. On May 1, 2008 Manfred Walter (SPD) succeeded Thomas Reich. For the first time in 60 years, the SPD has appointed the mayor of Gilching.

Town twinning

Gilching has had a partnership with the small Italian town of Cecina since 1989 .

Oberpfaffenhofen special airport

A part of the district of Neugilching is exposed to the aircraft noise resulting from the flight movements of the special airport Oberpfaffenhofen , which has been in operation since 1938 . Because of this problem, several citizens' initiatives have emerged. In future, the airport is also to be opened for so-called “qualified business travel” and thus for general aviation. The final decision to expand flight operations is still pending.
