James Krüss

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

James Jacob Hinrich Krüss (born May 31, 1926 on Heligoland ; † August 2, 1997 in Gran Canaria ) was a German poet and writer . He also used the pseudonyms Markus Polder and Felix Ritter .

Life

James Krüss grew up as the eldest son of the electrician Ludwig Krüss and his wife Margaretha Friederichs on Heligoland. 1941 Helgoländer children after Arnstadt in Thuringia , later to Hertigswalde in Sebnitz in Saxony sent . After graduating from secondary school in 1942, Krüss attended the Lunden Teachers Training College in Schleswig-Holstein , from 1943 the Ratzeburg Teachers Training College and, from 1944, the Bernhard Rust University in Braunschweig . In the late summer of 1944 he volunteered for the Air Force and experienced the end of the Second World War in Aussig in the Sudetenland . After the end of the war, he reached Cuxhaven , where his parents were staying, on foot and by bike . In his work Der Harmlos in 1988, Krüss presented himself as an initially convinced National Socialist , but who turned away from these convictions after the end of the war on this hike. In this story he also addressed his homosexuality . In his youth he had witnessed a major homosexual trial on the island. A return to Heligoland was not possible in 1945 because the island was a military training area and the British Air Force served as a bomb target.

In 1946 Krüss published his first book Der goldene Faden in Parus-Verlag and in the same year began studying at the University of Education in Lüneburg . As part of his studies, he also completed a school internship in Meinholz near Wietzendorf in 1946 . In 1948 he passed his exam as a primary school teacher; but he never worked as a teacher. In the same year Krüss moved to Reinbek near Hamburg and founded the magazine Helgoland , which was published until 1956, primarily for the residents evacuated from the island. In 1949 he moved to Lochham near Munich and met Erich Kästner , among others .

From 1951 he wrote radio plays for children. In 1956 his first children's book, The Lighthouse on the Lobster Cliffs, was published by Friedrich Oetinger. In between he made trips to Italy and Yugoslavia . Together with Peter Hacks he wrote children's poems for example "March Kisses" during a stay on the Yugoslav Adriatic in 1954, which they later shared among themselves. In 1960, Krüss received the German Youth Book Prize for my great-grandfather and I and became known in one fell swoop. In the same year he bought a house with a garden in Gilching , Bavaria , where he lived until 1966. His most popular book is Timm Thaler , published in 1962 , which was filmed in 1979 as a television series of the same name and on which an animation series of the same name from 2002 is based. The material was filmed again in 2017 under the direction of Andreas Dresen .

Krüss also worked for television himself: in 1963, ABC und Phantasie was created for ARD. Between 1966 and 1969, the children's series James' Animal Life with Suzanne Doucet and Hans Clarin was also broadcast on ARD (sound carriers LP and CD). Both programs were also moderated by Krüss. He also worked with Udo Jürgens for Jenny and Jonny - All Children of the World (1971–1973). The songs set to music and sung by Jürgens were also recorded on sound carriers.

After Krüss had already visited Tenerife in 1964, he bought a house in the village of La Calzada on Gran Canaria the following year, where he lived with his local partner Dario Perez from 1966 until his death. In 1976 he celebrated his 50th birthday in Schloss Köpenick in East Berlin . Many of his books also appeared in the GDR , some of them as first editions. In 1997 James Krüss died in Gran Canaria. He was buried at sea on September 27th off his home island of Helgoland .

Aftermath

On the occasion of his 75th birthday in 2001, his heirs donated the literary estate to the city of Munich; this includes more than 700 children's books by the author in their translations, including 476 picture books, children's novels and stories, as well as 25 editions by Timm Thaler, 17 editions by Mein Urgrgrßvater und I, 35 editions from the lighthouse on the lobster cliffs, 7 editions of The Happy Islands ... and 106 anthologies. There are also manuscripts, typescripts, correspondence, photographs, drawings, printed illustrations, records, newspaper reports, reviews and secondary academic literature.

The estate is exhibited in the James Krüss Tower in Blutenburg Castle , which has been the seat of the International Youth Library since 1983 . Since it can not be shown in full in the James Krüss Tower due to lack of space , further materials can be viewed in the study room.

On the island of Helgoland there is a small James Krüss Museum in two replica lobster booths in the museum courtyard of the Museum Helgoland . TV recordings, CDs, photographs, manuscripts and correspondence are shown there, including a letter from Astrid Lindgren to James Krüss.

Seven German schools bear his name, including the only general education school on Heligoland and the James Krüss primary school in Berlin.

In the International Youth Library in Munich, the James Krüss Prize for international children's and youth literature was awarded for the first time in 2013 in memory of the author and has been awarded every two years since then.
