The Marian Column of Kłodzko ( Glatz ), a town in the southwest of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship in Poland , is a late Baroque statue made of sandstone. It was built in the 17th century and stands on the west side of the ring.

description

The Marian column was created by the sculptor Hans Adam Bayerhoff from Glatz. Without the raised stand, it is 11.52 meters high and is crowned by the figure of the Immaculate Conception of Mary .

The column is surrounded by plague cartridges and other saints. On the balustrade there are the figures of the city patron Archangel Gabriel and the plague saints Sebastian , Karl Borromeo , Franz Xaver and Rochus . On the raised pedestal stand the hll. Joseph , Florian and Rochus . In the niche of the base there is a reclining figure of St. Rosalia . There are also two Habsburg double-headed eagles on the balustrade with the monograms hll. Mary and Joseph.

The column was originally painted, but the paintings no longer existed at the beginning of the 20th century. On the balustrades there were renovation inscriptions with the dates 1853, 1880 and 1897.

history

The monument was erected from 1680 to spring 1681. The actual Marian column was erected on July 13, 1680. The statues of the plague cartridge were completed on March 21, 1681.

The reason for the erection of the Marian Column was a large city fire and plague. The town fire broke out in 1676, on the day of the Annunciation . Thereupon a vow was given to erect a Marian column. Because of the plague distress in 1680, there was a vow to erect statues of the plague cartridge.

The statue was donated by the city of Glatz, voluntary donors from the local population and the Glatz Jesuit College . A drawing of the Prague Marian Column on Old Town Square from 1650, made by the rector of the Glatzer Jesuit College, served as a model for the Marian Column .
