Maria Anna Josepha of Austria
Maria Anna Josepha of Austria (born December 30, 1654 in Regensburg , † April 14, 1689 in Vienna ) was an Archduchess of Austria and by marriage Countess Palatine , Duchess of Neuburg and Jülich-Berg .
Life
Maria Anna Josepha was a daughter of the Roman-German Emperor Ferdinand III. (1608–1657) from his third marriage to Eleonora Gonzaga (1630–1686), daughter of Duke Charles II of Mantua . Maria Anna Josepha was a half-sister of Emperor Leopold I , who had been married to Eleonore Magdalene von Pfalz-Neuburg since 1676 , who intended to strengthen the connection between the Palatinate-Neuburg family and the imperial family.
Maria Anna Josepha married on October 25, 1678 in Wiener Neustadt Johann Wilhelm von Pfalz-Neuburg (1658-1716), the brother of Empress Eleonore. Because of his marriage to the emperor's daughter, Johann Wilhelm became Duke of Jülich and Berg in 1679 in order to make him a ruling prince. The wedding was performed by Archbishop Leopold Karl von Kollonitsch , who had the Marian Column erected on the main square of Wiener Neustadt in memory of this wedding and the marriage of Maria Anna's sister Eleonore . After marrying the Archduchess, Johann Wilhelm began to run an elaborate court in Düsseldorf .
Maria Anna died aged 34 during a visit at the Imperial Court in Vienna on tuberculosis and was in the Vienna Imperial Crypt buried. The two sons of their marriage died in 1683 and 1686 immediately after their birth.
