The column in Nordheim am Main

The Marian column in Nordheim am Main is a monument in the Franconian wine-growing town. It is located in front of the church in the middle of the market square.

history

The Marian column was erected in 1778. This is evidenced by an inscription in the shaft of the column : "Erected by the family / Knoblach / 1778". The family, whose coat of arms is emblazoned above the inscription, was one of the richest in Nordheim. Several foundations can be assigned to her, including the Mount of Olives next to the church and the crucifix in the churchyard. According to tradition, the statue resembles the column in Eibelstadt , as a Knoblach married a woman from Eibelstadt. To reduce her homesickness, he is said to have erected the Marian column.

The column has undergone several renovations over the years . One of them is also entered in the shaft: "Renewed vd Gemeinde / Nordheim / 1929". The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation classifies the column as a monument under the number D-6-75-155-16.

description

The monument is surrounded by an octagonal balustrade. Two ornate iron gates are attached in the middle. A curved base forms the base of the column. Two sayings adorn him. They are set in medallions and read: “A mother / and a virgin / at the same time./ God's Dempel dermahlei / the angel's joy in heaven / kingdom.” And “We beg Mary to / you / to find refuge here / all of us Hope belongs to / you / out of fear of / our sins ”.

The column tapers towards the top. It opens with two volutes on which two putti sit. At its height are also the inscriptions indicating the foundation and renovation. A cornice leads to the eponymous statue of the Virgin Mary. A pair of angels hold the globe on which Mary is enthroned with a scepter. She is shown twice as the Queen of Heaven , holding the baby Jesus with the orb in her left hand and turning to both sides of the market square.
