East Hesse
East Hesse is a common, but not an official, regional name for the eastern part of the State of Hesse and a former planning region . It corresponds roughly to the Hessian catchment area of the regional center of Fulda and essentially comprises the district of Fulda , the eastern part of the Vogelsberg district and the old districts of Hersfeld and Schlüchtern . There is no clear demarcation between East Hesse and the region names North Hesse , Central Hesse and South Hesse . In early sources, a landscape that is roughly identical to today's East Hesse was widely known as Buchonia .
geography
Administrative boundaries
Most of East Hesse belongs to the North Hessian administrative district of Kassel (district of Fulda and Altland district of Hersfeld). Smaller parts are to be assigned to the central Hessian administrative region Gießen (eastern Vogelsbergkreis) and the southern Hessian administrative region Darmstadt (Altlandkreis Schlüchtern). There are also some conceptual or geographical overlaps between East Hesse and the other regional names. In the district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg in particular, opinions differ as to whether you feel you belong to North or East Hesse. The police headquarters in East Hesse include the districts of Fulda, Hersfeld-Rotenburg and Vogelsberg.
landscape
As a closed physical landscape , East Hesse corresponds mainly to the catchment area of the upper Fulda to about Bad Hersfeld and, in the east, the smaller Hessian part of the Werra to about Heringen , which is mainly fed via the Ulster, which runs on both sides near the border with Thuringia . In this interpretation, the Rhine-Weser watershed forms a comparatively sharp border to the south, where it runs in the Hohe Rhön along the state border with Bavaria , as well as to the south-west ( land ridge ), west ( Vogelsberg ) and north-west ( Knüll ), a comparatively sharp border that does not match cultural spatial similarities must match. The highest mountain in the region as well as in the federal states of Hesse and the Rhön is at 950 m above sea level. NHN the Wasserkuppe .
Framed by the basaltic low mountain ranges and ridges, the Fulda sink with the Fulda basin forms the scenic and cultural center of the region, which lies a little west of the center. In the north is the Seulingswald as a red sandstone north roof of the Rhön; The red sandstone landscapes of Fulda-Haune-Tafelland and Western Rhön foreland belong to East Hesse, as well as small western parts of the Salzunger Werrabergland . All of the landscapes mentioned belong to the (sub) greater natural region of the East Hessian Uplands , which, however, in the Fulda-Werra Uplands , from which only the Seulingswald as the extreme south meets the region, extends significantly north over North Hesse to Lower Saxony . In addition, the Rhön also includes larger parts of Thuringia and Bavaria.
Occasionally, the Bergwinkel region and the Altlandkreis Schlüchtern are also included in East Hesse. This lies south across the watershed and drains over the Kinzig to the Main .
Economy and culture
economy
The regional center of Fulda is the economic and cultural center of the mostly agricultural region. The nearest regional centers Kassel , Würzburg , Frankfurt am Main and Giessen are approx. 100 km away. The second largest city in the region, Bad Hersfeld , is classified in the State Development Plan of Hesse as a medium-sized center with partial function of a regional center . The Osthessenschau , the largest consumer goods fair in the region, took place in Fulda every two years from 1972 to 2010 . As a Hessian region, East Hesse distinguishes itself in tourism through its unique landscape features such as the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve .
Dialect space
East Hesse is an independent dialect area in the Fuldaer Land and in the Rhön ( Rhöner Platt ). The language area extends in the south to Schlüchtern , in the west in the Vogelsberg to Lauterbach , in the north to Bad Hersfeld and in the east to Geisa ( Thuringia ). In the north it borders on the Lower Hessian , in the west on the Central Hessian , in the east on the Thuringian , in the southeast on the East Franconian and in the southwest on the Rhine Franconian . According to Wiesinger , the dialect area of East Hesse includes the Fulda area from the Rhön to Bad Hersfeld.
