hr4 is a radio program of the Hessischer Rundfunk in the format of a service and entertainment wave. The program has been produced from the hr studio in Kassel since September 2004 , and previously from the hr Funkhaus in Frankfurt am Main since it began broadcasting on October 6, 1986 . The messages are taken over by Hr-info in Frankfurt.

program

Under the motto "hr4 - Simply good on it" (since September 2017 also: hr4 - music that makes you happy ), the station offers predominantly German-language music, modern hits or German-language pop, but also international hits and oldies. The program is aimed at an audience over 50 and is compared with SWR4 , SR 3 and WDR 4 in terms of content .

Since a format change under Music Director Gerhard Schilling in May 2017, 50% German hits and pop music and 50% English-language international hits have been shown on weekdays in the daily program. Instrumental music as well as folk music was completely removed from the daily program. After a transition phase, this format has also been broadcast on weekends from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. since September 2017. Since January 2018, 40% hits and 60% international music have been playing.

The program includes advice and consumer topics as well as current information, mainly from Hessen. In addition, hr4 offers a “listeners hour” twice a week, during which experts answer questions from listeners on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Every day (except Saturdays) from 1pm to 2pm there is the program “Wünsch dir was”, in which German-language titles and hits are played and the proportion of international hits is low. This music format is also broadcast every Saturday from 5 pm to midnight in the “hr4 dance party”. In addition, the listeners can vote between folk music or current hits. From the battle “Big Beats vs. Big Cheeks ”there are four rounds. The first round at around 5:15 p.m. The second game round at around 6:35 pm, the third at around 7:35 pm and the last at around 8:15 pm.

The “hr4 hit parade” runs every Sunday from 5 pm to 8 pm and is evaluated by an online voting site. The motto is "Your hits, your choice".

From 8 pm to midnight, except on Saturday evenings, “Music is in the Air” is broadcast, an unmoderated program, only interrupted by news, weather and traffic.

From midnight to 6 a.m., hr4 will take over the ARD hit night , which has been produced by NDR 1 since January 14, 2018 .

The first regional radio broadcast was around Kassel in 1948 , with its own studio from 1952, nationwide on hr2 from 1964 , and replaced by the Nordhessen-Journal on hr1 in 1980 . The regional windows were expanded during the time in office of Friedrich Franz Sackenheim as editor-in-chief (1981–1991). The regional programs Rhein-Main-Journal (from Frankfurt) and Südhessen-Journal (Bensheim) had been introduced on hr1 in October 1984. The Osthessen Journal (Fulda) began in June 1986 . With the start of hr4 in October 1986, the regional programs changed there. In January 1987 the Mittelhessen-Journal (Wetzlar) was added as the fifth . These programs could be heard Monday to Friday from 12:05 to 12:30 (later until 13:00) and from 16:05 to 17:00. With the move from hr4 to Kassel in September 2004, the regional broadcasts from North and East Hesse as well as those from the Rhine-Main area and South Hesse were merged. The regional windows have existed in their current form since the end of January 2012.

Listener structure

The media analysis published in March 2011 found 361,000 listeners per hour for hr4 - Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. the daily reach was therefore 918,000 listeners Monday to Friday. hr4 is mostly heard by the elderly. According to Media Analyze Radio II / 2007, an average of 73.8 percent of the hr4 listeners were 60 years or older. 89.8 percent were 50 years or older.

RDS

Like all Hessischer Rundfunk stations , hr4 also uses the RDS function of the dynamic RDS-PS and usually sends the station name as well as the track played with the artist and, at irregular intervals, telephone numbers (e.g. traffic jam hotline).

reception

hr4 can be received via VHF in Hessen with the appropriate regionalization. Europe-wide reception (with the regional version south) is possible via DVB-S . Since March 2007, hr4 Süd has also been broadcast as live streaming on the Internet. The program is also broadcast throughout Hessen via digital radio via the hr multiplex in the DAB + standard . This started operations on December 1, 2011. Since June 7, 2018, all three regional versions can only be received nationwide via this reception channel. Unlike the state programs of the other West German state broadcasters ( Bayern 1 , Bayern 2 , NDR 1 MV / NDS / SH, SWR4 BW / RP and WDR 2 ), the regional versions for Central, North and East Hesse are not available as live web radio.
