Manfred Krupp (2016)

Manfred Krupp (born February 25, 1956 in Troisdorf ) is a German journalist . He has been the director of Hessischer Rundfunk (hr) since March 1, 2016 , where he previously served as television editor-in-chief and television director . He is the successor to Helmut Reitze in the position of artistic director.

Life and work

Krupp, whose parents were electrical engineers and pharmacists, grew up with three siblings in Neuwied . At the age of 14 he wrote an article for the local newspaper. After graduating from high school in 1974, he enlisted in the Bundeswehr and was employed by the press office of III Corps deployed in Koblenz. He then studied politics, sociology and public law in Marburg and Gießen from 1976 to 1983 .

His time as a course planner at the University of Kassel between 1983 and 1984 was followed by an internship at the Hessischer Rundfunk, where he became editor in 1986. Afterwards he was state political correspondent and head of the Wiesbaden studio. In 1995 he succeeded Uwe Günzler as head of hessenschau , whose editor-in-chief he succeeded Luc Jochimsen on April 1, 2001, and headed the "Hesseninformation" department. According to the FAZ, he could then “claim that there was little in-house opposition to his appointment. Since then he has been responsible for current affairs, regional issues, sport and business, also supplying the daily topics ; Others are responsible for culture, television games and entertainment at the station. ”He became known to a wider audience as a political commentator on the daily topics and as a state political correspondent from Wiesbaden and former moderator of the hessenschau . In 2001 Krupp became editor-in-chief of television and in 2005 television director of hr-fernsehen , and since 2011 Krupp was deputy director of Hessischer Rundfunk.

At the end of 2015, a search committee headed by the Chairman of the Broadcasting Council, Jörn Dulige, voted unanimously to propose Krupp as the director of Helmut Reitze . He thus prevailed against Jan Metzger , who then decided not to apply. On February 5, 2016 he was elected as the new artistic director by the Broadcasting Council. The Broadcasting Council set his term of office at six years. He took office on March 1, 2017.

In May 2016, Krupp was elected to the board of the television research working group .

In 2017, Krupp initiated the development of a program area "Hesseninformation", which, with a variable team of employees from the television , radio , online and social media editorial offices , is to quickly prepare regional news from Hessen and make it usable in a cross-media manner.

Since 2018, under the leadership of Krupp, a comprehensive structural reform and digital realignment of the Hessischer Rundfunk has been discussed. Resources are to be shifted from the linear program to online formats and cross-media offers, not least in order to reach younger target groups. In this context, a controversial public debate about the planned program reform 2019/2020 of Hr2-kultur was held.

In August 2018, Krupp was appointed to the Council for Digital Ethics by the Hessian state government .
