Jan Metzger

Jan Christoph Metzger (* 1956 in Bonn ) is a German journalist . From August 1, 2009 to July 31, 2019, he was director of Radio Bremen .

Life

After graduating from high school in Darmstadt and doing community service with the Action Reconciliation Service for Peace in Israel , Metzger studied history, political science and sociology in Freiburg im Breisgau , Berlin , Mexico City and Frankfurt am Main , where he studied at the Evangelisches Studienwerk Villigst Johann Wolfgang Goethe University as a Magister Artium .

In 1983 he completed an internship at the Hessischer Rundfunk , where he then worked as an editor , presenter and reporter . In 1988/89 Metzger reported as ARD radio correspondent from the Iberian Peninsula , 1989-1994 from what was then Czechoslovakia . From 1995 Metzger headed the information radio hr1 , from 1997 the hessen television , until in 2004 he was finally appointed head of the expanded main department of program management television of the Hessischer Rundfunk. During this time he trained as a coach and organizational consultant (DGTA).

In 2006, Metzger came to ZDF , where he took over the deputy editorial management of the Heute-Journal . In January 2009 he was appointed editor-in-chief of the Heute-Journal. The Broadcasting Council Radio Bremen elected Jan Metzger on May 14th, 2009 in a closed session with 25 votes with one abstention as the successor to director Heinz Glässgen , who retired at the end of June 2009.

After ten years as director of Radio Bremen, Metzger decided against a third term and returned to his Hessian homeland in summer 2019. On March 5, 2019, the Broadcasting Council elected Dr. Yvette Gerner as the new director of Radio Bremen. On August 1st, she succeeded Jan Metzger. Metzger has been advising and training international executives u. a. for the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and teaches in Switzerland .

Jan Metzger's grandfather Ludwig Metzger and father Günther Metzger each belonged to the SPD parliamentary group in the German Bundestag for several terms and were Lord Mayors of Darmstadt. His brother Mathias Metzger is the husband of the Hessian state politician Dagmar Metzger .
