The heute-journal is a news magazine of ZDF .

concept

In contrast to today's news at 7 p.m., the heute-journal deals with individual topics of the day in more detail and illuminates the background, as well as interviews with politicians, business leaders, experts and other relevant people of the day. There is also a stock market report from Frankfurt. This is followed by the weather report. The former moderator and editor-in-chief, Wolf von Lojewski , once summed up the objective with the catchy formula: " Today at 7 p.m. it reports: Politician XY throws in the towel, we'll say where!" that is, not all of the day's topics are presented in a film. The show is similar to the daily news of the ARD .

Time slot

The heute-journal went on January 2, 1978 broadcast. To begin with, the heute-journal was broadcast Mondays to Thursdays at 9 p.m. and Fridays at 10 p.m. with a broadcast length of 20 minutes. From January 1, 1984, the broadcast date was shifted to 9:45 p.m. (currently again inconsistent). The broadcast was expanded to 30 minutes in 1991. Since 1992 the magazine has also been broadcast on Saturdays; since January 16, 2000 also on Sundays. As of March 31, 2019, this issue is also 30 minutes long.

The magazine is usually broadcast at 9:45 p.m. with a length of around 27 minutes and a separate three-minute weather forecast. From Monday to Thursday, the heute-journal will also be shown on the Phoenix broadcaster with a sign language interpreter parallel to the ZDF broadcast.

Today's journal starts on Friday at 10 p.m., after the Friday crime thriller . On Saturday the program will be shortened to 15 minutes and will only start after the Saturday crime thriller (or other entertainment program) at around 10:45 p.m.

In the event of a crisis, either the regular program is extended (up to an hour) or an additional heute-journal special is included in the program, which, comparable to today's special programs, usually lasts no longer than ten to 15 minutes. At sporting events (mainly at international football matches in the half-time break), heute-journal is shown in a seven-minute short edition, which means that the second news block with stock market news and the cultural contribution at the end of the broadcast is omitted.

Since September 2011, heute-journal has also been broadcast live on the Internet (in the ZDF media library).

today journal up: date

Since September 7, 2020, ZDF has been broadcasting an extension to the main program on weekdays. Today's 15-minute journal up: date covers the day's topics between 11:45 p.m. and 1 a.m. with background reports, interviews and interviews. The show replaces heute + and is also the responsibility of the editorial staff of the heute journal .

Opening credits and studio background

In the 1970s and 1980s, the opening credits showed the presenters live immediately before the broadcast began. A clock was faded in and important headlines of the day ran as a ticker over the lower edge of the screen. The sound of the ticker corresponded to the word “today” in Morse code (four short, one short, two short and one long, one long, one short). In the 1990s, the Morse code was replaced by different acoustic backgrounds, but the view of the studios, which had been modernized several times over the years, was retained. The theme tune has also been changed several times over the years.

With the introduction of the new virtual studio (2009), the well-known opening credits were abandoned and you could now see a camera slowly zooming in on the moderators, while the topics were faded in and out in the background; there was no longer a real intro. As of February 19, 2011, heute-journal received a darker background that was different from the other heute-broadcasts, and the 2D world map used there was replaced by five globes . At the beginning the headlines were shown again in the foreground and there was again a "real" intro. From September 12, 2013, the background became a little lighter again and thus approximated the other broadcasts today, but the globes and the intro were retained.

In 2021 the studio was again technically modernized, the first broadcast was broadcast on July 19, 2021.

Awards

In October 2013, heute-journal was awarded the German television prize in the “Best News Show” category.

In 2016, a TV spot from heute-journal won 1st prize at the International Eyes & Ears Awards in the category Best On-Air Program Spot: News & Information .

Moderation Marietta Slomka received a Golden Camera in the category "Best Information" on behalf of heute-journal .

Others

Since June 25, 2007, the heute-journal has been broadcast in the 16: 9 aspect ratio , like the other heute broadcasts, and since August 2, 2015, it has been broadcast in native HD .

The programs can be obtained free of charge as video and audio podcasts. Since December 2011, there has been a dedicated website, heute-journal plus , in which additional background information on the program is compiled.
