Susanne Gelhard

Susanne Gelhard (born October 30, 1957 in Mainz ) is a German journalist , reporter and foreign correspondent .

Life

Gelhard studied Slavic Studies , American Studies and Journalism at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . During a semester abroad she studied in Moscow .

Gelhard has been working for Second German Television since 1983 . She first completed a traineeship , then worked in the ZDF main city editorial department and co-moderator of heute-journal .

From 1989 to 1992 she was a correspondent for the ZDF studio in Vienna , then its director in 1992/1993. In this role she was responsible for reporting from a total of twelve countries in Central and Southeastern Europe . During this time, Gelhard reported extensively and ruthlessly for ZDF on the Balkan War and the political collapse of the former Yugoslavia . Gelhard presented harrowing images, including "monstrous images of war corpses", which raised the question of what kind of war reporting should be allowed on television.

Gelhard has received several awards for her reporting from Yugoslavia. In 1991 she received the Telestar from ZDF and ARD . In 1992 she received the Golden Gong for a report from the destroyed Vukovar . Gelhard summarized her journalistic experience and research in her book Ab heute ist Krieg. From 1994 to 1996 she was editor-in-chief of the news magazine auslandsjournal at ZDF . From 1997 to February 2002 she was the director of the ZDF studio in Warsaw . From July 2002, she succeeded Joachim Jauer as head of the ZDF regional studio in Berlin .

From January 2009 to March 2015 Gelhard headed the ZDF foreign studio in London . On April 1, 2015, she moved back to the ZDF broadcasting center in Mainz to work in the ZDFinfo , Society and Life program area as editor of the ZDFzeit series . On June 1, 2017, she took over the management of the ZDF regional studio Rhineland-Palatinate in Mainz.

Gelhard is married and has three children.
