High Vogelsberg Nature Park
The Hoher Vogelsberg Nature Park is located in the higher elevations of the Vogelsberg in the middle of Hesse . It encompasses the area of eleven communities around the Oberwald , the central part of the mountains, in the Vogelsbergkreis , the Wetteraukreis , the Gießen district and the Main-Kinzig district . The park has an area of 883.36 km² and is thus roughly the size of the federal capital Berlin . As of November 2016, the name was changed to the Vogelsberg Volcanic Region Nature Park .
The park was established in 1956 as a conservation area Vogelsberg km² set up on an area of 225 and in 1957 Natural Park Upper Vogelsberg renamed. Between 1963 and 1969 it was expanded to 384.47 km², and in 1967 it was renamed the Hoher Vogelsberg Nature Park . In 2004 it was expanded to its present area of 883.36 km².
The Vogelsberg is an old volcanic area with the largest basalt mass in Europe. The nature park is characterized by mixed forest, grassland and wetlands as well as a raised bog. Numerous streams flow in a star shape in all directions. In Grebenhain a running main watersheds Germany. Among the springing in Vogelsberg rivers include Schwalm and Lauter , the part of the river system of the Fulda and the Weser are leading to the river system of the Main and the Rhine belonging Nidda , Nidder and weather as well as the ohm , which over the Lahn drained to the Rhine .
Before reunification, the geographical center of the Federal Republic was near Herbstein in the Hoher Vogelsberg Nature Park. The German Alps-Baltic Sea holiday route runs right through the nature park.
