The Reinhardswald Nature Park is a nature park in the northern tip of the state of Hesse , in the Kassel district . The nature park, which was newly designated in 2017, is 44,851 hectares in size.

Location and demarcation

The nature park is located in Northern Hesse, completely within the Kassel district, in the (community-free) forestry district Reinhardswald and the communities Bad Karlshafen , Grebenstein , Hofgeismar , Immenhausen , Liebenau , Trendelburg , Reinhardshagen and Wesertal , with a small peripheral area in Fuldatal . In terms of natural space , it includes the eponymous Reinhardswald (in the Solling, Bramwald and Reinhardswald natural area ) the Wesertal valley to the east (with parts of the lowest section of the Fulda valley) and the Hessian parts of the Bramwald , each up to the Hessian-Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalian border. Part of the nature park, however, is also the completely differently landscaped Diemelland, bordering the Reinhardswald to the west , with parts of the West Hessian depression and the lower Diemel valley, which is already part of the upper Weserbergland as Oberwälder Land . While the villages and small towns in the north (including Bad Karlshafen, Helmarshausen and Lippoldsberg) are located in the nature park, the urban area of Hofgeismar and large parts of the intensely agricultural Esse lowland to the east of it were left out. Compared to the draft planning from 2016, the area actually designated has been reduced slightly due to political interventions by some municipalities.

To the east, on the right, the Weser, on the Lower Saxony side, is directly connected to the Münden Nature Park and to the north is the Solling-Vogler Nature Park . The Teutoburg Forest / Eggegebirge Nature Park is adjacent on the North Rhine-Westphalian side in the west .

Landscape and equipment

The Reinhardswald itself and the Bramwald are mainly composed of nutrient-poor sandstones from the Buntsandstein and are largely forested. In the Diemeltal, on the other hand, limestones of the shell limestone predominate, bearing extensive limestone grasslands that are predominantly designated as nature reserves. In the Hofgeismarer Rötsenke in between, made of soft sediments from the Röt, there are flat undulating plains and rounded landscapes. They are partly dominated by basalt peaks , such as the Gahrenberg in Reinhardswald, the Schöneberg , Heuberg and Westberg near Hofgeismar and the Deiselberg near Trendelburg.

Of the area of the nature park, nature reserves are around 1270 hectares, natural monuments around 34 hectares and landscape protection areas around 3964 hectares. Natura 2000 areas (“ FFH ” areas) cover around 18,960 hectares, with this category overlapping with the others. This means that the proportion of protected areas in the nature park is around 40 percent of the total area. The remaining areas are not subject to any special protection.

The well-known sights in the nature park include, for example, the Sababurg with the zoo and the nearby Urwald Sababurg nature reserve . there is a visitor center in the zoo there.

organization

The nature park is supported by a support association, organized as a registered association (eV). Members are the district of Kassel, the Hessen-Forst regional office and the municipalities of Bad Karlshafen, Grebenstein, Hofgeismar, Immenhausen, Liebenau and Trendelburg. There was a political controversy about the membership of the city of Immenhausen, as the levy for financing the nature park of five euros per inhabitant was too high. The city is currently only a conditional member and would like to use the two-year notice period to withdraw. Erik Aschenbrand, who resigned in 2018 to move to the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve, was head of the nature park when it was designated; Bianka Zydek is his successor. The Nature Park Association has six employees.

The nature park has an annual budget of around 200,000 euros. It is financed by a contribution from its members. In the three-year start-up phase, the state of Hesse granted start-up financing totaling 450,000 euros.
