Panorama of the Hochtaunus from the eastern Hintertaunus |
The Taunus Nature Park (until December 2012 called Hochtaunus Nature Park ) is a nature park with an area of 134,775 hectares (1347.75 km²) in the Taunus low mountain range . It is one of two Hessian nature parks in the Taunus and the second largest nature park in Hesse.
Geographical location
The Taunus Nature Park is located in the Hochtaunuskreis , Lahn-Dill-Kreis , Limburg-Weilburg , Main-Taunus-Kreis , Wetteraukreis and Gießen district . Insofar as its borders are not identical to the external borders of its member bodies, it is bounded in the west by the federal motorway 3 , in the north roughly by the Lahntal (but extends between Runkel and Weilburg over the Lahn into the Westerwald ) and in the east by the federal motorway 5 . In the south it ends where the Main-Taunus foreland begins between Frankfurt am Main and Wiesbaden . The park borders directly on the Rhein-Taunus Nature Park to the west .
The nature park essentially comprises the eastern half of the natural spatial main unit of the High Taunus, known as the Hochtaunus . Here extends Taunus main ridge with the large field Berg ( 881.5 m ) as the highest Taunus mountain. The park also includes the eastern Hintertaunus , which is located north of this ridge and is much larger in area . In addition, there is the Vordertaunus , a narrow strip in front of the ridge to the south , which slopes down to the Rhine-Main lowlands . The original name of the park as the Hochtaunus Nature Park was therefore not entirely accurate.
flora
The Hochtaunus is hardly populated and densely covered with coniferous forest. In the eastern Hintertaunus there is predominantly deciduous forest . Characteristic of the Taunus, with its wavy to mountainous relief, are extensive orchards , which are particularly located in the Vordertaunus and on the eastward slopes of the Wetterau .
use
The above-mentioned districts have formed a special purpose association with the city of Frankfurt am Main with the task of protecting the native flora and fauna in this area, which is particularly suitable as a recreation area, of preserving, shaping and caring for the landscape and thereby giving people natural recreation to enable. The nature park is a popular local recreation area for residents of the Rhine-Main and Lahn-Dill conurbations . The combination of nature conservation and tourism attracts 18 million visitors annually.
Assignments and awards
One of the main tasks in the Taunus Nature Park is visitor management - promoting the smoothest possible cooperation between different groups of people looking for relaxation, from hikers and riders to mountain bikers and skiers. The measures include the creation of a trail system for cross-country skiers, which can be used by mountain bikers in summer, as well as the connection to local public transport by creating and maintaining a regional bus network. The latter in particular helps relieve environmentally sensitive areas by reducing car traffic in the park. There are over 120 parking spaces in its area, which are also directly connected to the hiking trails. 1240 km of hiking trails can be discovered with guided hikes or on your own. The park offers the best conditions for sporty visitors in every season.
For the creation of this attractive offer for recreation close to the city, the nature park was awarded the first prize in the federal competition of German nature parks of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) in 1998.
organization
The Taunus Nature Park is legally organized as a special purpose association and takes on certain tasks of the members in accordance with the law on communal community work (KGG) . The seat of the office of the Zweckverband is the Taunus Information Center (TIZ) on Hohemarkstrasse in Oberursel .
Running events
The Taunus Nature Park has been organizing the annual Weiltalweg Landscape Marathon since 2003 . In addition, since 2008 a relay run parallel to the marathon has been offered over the same marathon distance and route, with a relay consisting of 4 participants. Since 2010, the park has also offered a 22 km run.
