Eppenhain is the smallest district of the city of Kelkheim (Taunus) and at 423 meters the highest town in the Main-Taunus district in southern Hesse .

Geographical location

Eppenhain, town center and telecommunications tower

Eppenhain is located in the High Taunus on a wooded plateau around four kilometers south of the Taunus main ridge . The state-approved resort can only be reached by traffic via an access road that also ends there. Therefore Eppenhain has no through traffic. On the Atzelberg ( 507  m above sea  level ) north of the village there is an approximately 100 meter high, disused telecommunications tower . Not far from it is the Atzelberg Tower, a 31 meter high observation tower , which was rebuilt after a fire in 2008 .

The highest mountain in the area is the Rossert ( 516  m above sea level ), Eppenhain's local mountain . Eppenhain is located on the western slope of the wooded ridge between the Atzelberg in the north and the Rossert in the south. The place is divided into two parts, the old town center and a new development area, mainly between 1950 and 1990. Both parts are separated by a wooded area and only connected by two roads.

Down the slope of the village of Eppenhain, pastures and orchards open up into the valley called Jossgrund between Vockenhausen and Ehlhalten . There is a wide range of well-marked hiking trails around Eppenhain.

history

town hall

Eppenhain was first mentioned in a document around the end of the 12th century. The previous alleged first mention of the document from 1285 is based on incorrect information from the Hessian Main State Archives. It was part of the old church district of Schloßborn, which encompassed 24 villages . Presumably it was already an iron ore mining area, as Eppenhain was known as from the early Middle Ages to the 19th century. Old tunnels can still be found in the whole of Eppenhain. An entrance into an old tunnel is still possible from the old Franconian court rider, built in 1701.

Up into the 19th century, the Eppenhain lived a meager and hard life. An improvement only arose when the former Eppenhain teacher August Gasser (1834–1914), who was director of the local school from 1864 to 1867, returned to the town as a pensioner in 1895 and was soon concerned with a revival of the local economy, especially the Tourism, endeavored. He was committed to the recognition of Eppenhain as a climatic health resort and attracted wealthy Frankfurt families to the Taunusort for a summer vacation. In addition, he campaigned for the construction of a country school home, the Tanneck house in Rossertstrasse, which was used by the then Viktoria-Gymnasium, today's Bettina-Gymnasium in Frankfurt . With his activity, Gasser also supported the establishment of a local hotel business, which was founded as the Haus Montesita guesthouse . Today's IB Hotel and Conference Center Georg-Leber-Haus emerged from it. He also initiated the operation of an outdoor swimming pool, which was built in the 1920s and was in operation until the 1950s. As part of the revitalization of tourism in Eppenhain, the Luisenturm was also built on the Atzelberg in 1913.

On December 31, 1971, Eppenhain merged with the neighboring town of Ruppertshain to form the municipality of Rossert in order to avoid incorporation by the town of Kelkheim. However, this place only existed until 1977. In the course of the Hessian regional reform , the community Rossert was incorporated together with Fischbach on January 1, 1977 to Kelkheim, although traditionally there was a close connection to the neighboring town of Eppstein , where the next train station was.

coat of arms

On October 28, 1968, the municipality of Eppenhain was awarded a coat of arms with the following blazon : In a silver field sprinkled with green oak leaves, a red oblique left-hand bar, covered with two silver strips.

Culture and sights

Buildings

The Friedenslinde commemorates the fallen of both world wars. The dead from Eppenhain are named on a memorial stone in front of the linden tree.

Parish church

The parish church of St. Joseph was built on the border of the former place in 1907/1908 according to a design by the Wiesbaden government building councilor Richard Saran . The stone used comes mainly from the quarries around Eppenhain, but basalt stones from the Westerwald were also used. As a special feature, the church has a roofed gate porch. Inside there are three neo-Gothic altars.

August Gasser Fountain

In front of the old Eppenhain town hall, the last mayor of the municipality (until 1977), Franz Caspar Fischer, had this sandstone fountain built at his own expense in 1993 in memory of August Gasser. The fountain pillar shows the coat of arms of the former municipality of Eppenhain, the front of the octagonal fountain basin shows the words "August Gasser 1834–1914".

town hall

The town hall was built in 1823/24 as a school building with a mass altar for Catholic worship. Since the church was built in 1908, it was used as a school alone. From 1932 to 1972 it served as the town hall. Since then it has been used as a club house.

Atzelberg Tower

The Atzelbergturm is a well-known observation tower on the 507 meter high Atzelberg. Due to its location on a ridge of the Vordertaunus , it offers a clear view in all directions. The tower built in 1980 by the city of Kelkheim burned down on the morning of August 5, 2008, presumably due to arson. In 2012 a wooden observation tower almost 31 meters high was built and opened in October 2012. The tower is closed due to fire damage in the summer of 2017.

Rossert rock group

The rock group on the summit of the Rossert is the highest point of the 119 hectare Rossert-Hainkopf-Dachsbau nature reserve , which was designated in 1977. According to a medieval legend, the rock formation is the devil's castle on the Rossert .
