József Bozsik [ ˈjoːʒɛf ˈboʒik ] (born November 28, 1925 in Kispest , † May 31, 1978 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian football player and member of the " Golden Elf " of Hungary . His nickname was "Cucu".
Life
Bozsik was one of six children of a modestly paid factory worker and began his football career - like his childhood friend Ferenc Puskás - at Kispesti AC (KAC), where he organized the game in midfield from the position of right runner. The two-legged, precise shooter moved on the pitch at a sedate trot, but was an esthete of the football game, never hasty, always intelligent, with an overview and enormous ball security. In 1945 he made his debut in the Kispest first team and soon became the engine of his team.
In 1949 he won the first championship title with his club, which in the same year was renamed by the communist government in Honvéd Budapest and officially declared an army club. All players were given a military rank - Bozsik the major rank - without actually exercising a military function.
Two years earlier, in 1947, he was appointed to the national team for the first time. As part of the much-acclaimed Golden Elf , he subsequently won the gold medal at the 1952 Summer Olympics and in 1953 the European National Team Cup, which lasted several years . In the same year he was the goalscorer in the legendary 6-3 away win of the Hungarians against the English national team . That game marked England's first home defeat against a team from mainland Europe. At the Football World Cup in 1954 , Hungary was the big favorite and reached the final with 25: 7 goals without much effort. In the quarter-finals, the Brazilian Nílton Santos Bozsik fouled and the situation escalated: Both fought a short boxing match and referee Arthur Ellis sent both off the field in the 71st minute. However, the suspension was only in effect for the remainder of the game. In the semifinals, Bozsik led the Hungarians onto the field as captain (Puskás was injured) and won the game against Uruguay 4-2. He experienced his bitterest hour in the national dress in the final, when Hungary lost 3-2 to Germany .
When the Hungarian uprising was put down by the Soviet army in 1956 , Bozsik stayed in Hungary, unlike teammates like Puskás , Kocsis or Czibor . In the following years he became a member of parliament (more of a figurehead than a real politician) and ran a women's fashion store with his wife in Budapest. After his playing career, he tried his hand at coaching Honvéd for a short time, but then became a technical advisor and member of the club's board. In 1974 he was Hungarian national coach for one international match. He wrote comments for the Budapest sports newspaper "Képes Sport" and died of a heart attack at the age of 52.
Bozsik is still considered the most famous Kispesti / Honvéd player alongside Ferenc Puskás. This is why the Honvéd Budapest venue, located in the Kispest district, is now called the “ Bozsik József Stadium ”.
His son is the future coach Péter Bozsik .
