A football competition was held at the 1952 Summer Olympics in the Finnish capital Helsinki . In addition to Helsinki with the Olympic Stadium ( Helsingin olympiastadion ) and the Töölön Pallokenttä , the venues were Urheilukeskus in Kotka, Lahti with the Lahden kisapuisto , the Tampereen stadium in Tampere and the Kupittaan jalkapallo stadium in Turku.
Hungary was the first to be won by an Eastern European team whose dominance determined the Olympic football tournaments until 1980. Germany reached the semifinals for the first time thanks to the German amateur team supervised by national coach Sepp Herberger at an Olympic soccer tournament, but was eliminated there against the Yugoslavs, who thus reached the final like four years earlier. In the quarter-finals they won 4-2 after extra time against Brazil in an important football tournament until the 2014 World Cup. In the game for third place, the German team lost to defending champions Sweden, whose squad included five players from the 1950 World Cup .
The sensation in this tournament was Luxembourg's victory over the British team 5-3 after extra time. Luxembourg was then eliminated in the round of 16 against Brazil.
The hosts Finland were eliminated in the round of 16 against Austria.
Many of the Hungarian team's players also made it to the final of the 1954 World Cup two years later . None of the German players was in the 54 World Cup squad, but Georg Stollenwerk was part of the 58 World Cup squad and in 1958 played all six World Cup games for the German team.
