Rydell first played at Billingsfors IK , with whom he rose to the Allsvenskan in 1946 . However, the club went straight back down with only three points, which is still the negative record in Swedish football. Rydell then moved to Malmö FF . From 1949 to 1951 he won the Swedish championship three times in a row with the club, with the team setting a record with 49 games without defeat between May 1949 and June 1951. In 1950 Rydell was the league's top scorer with 22 goals this season. The center forward scored 162 goals in 210 games for MFF . Together with teammate Erik Nilsson , he ended his career in 1953.

Rydell played 14 caps for Sweden . At the 1950 World Cup , he formed the largest block in the selection with eight other Malmö FF players. However, he himself could not get past Hasse Jeppson and therefore only played in the final group game of the final round against Spain . With the 3: 1 success the third place was achieved. Two years later he was part of the team at the Helsinki Olympic Games that defeated the German amateur national team 2-0 in the game for third place and thus won bronze.
