Career

Berggren made his debut during the first division season in 1968 for Djurgårdens IF in the Allsvenskan. First he ran for the club as a defender. With the club, he often occupied places in the top midfield of the league alongside players like Sven Lindman , Ove Rübsamen and Dan Brzokoupil . In the 1974 season he played under coach Antonio Durán for the first time in the circle of the national team, but was slowed by an injury and ultimately not appointed by national coach Georg Ericson .

Berggren was often characterized by the fact that he gave up his position in defense in the last minutes of the game to help on the offensive, and thus contributed to some point gains. After striker to Anders Grönhagen had hurt, he became so in the season in 1977 with five goals this season for best internal association scorers. Then coach Bengt Persson promoted him next to Grönhagen in the striker, which Berggren thanked him with 19 goals this season. Although he finished with the club only fifth place in the table, in the scorers list of the Allsvenskan he finished first before Billy Ohlsson of Hammarby IF . Due to his accuracy, he also made his national team debut during the season. In his first game on August 16 that year against the Danish national team , he came on as a substitute for Thomas Sjöberg and crowned his debut with the Swedish consolation goal in the 1: 2 defeat. By the end of the year he played a total of three internationals , only in the 1: 3 away defeat against the selection of Czechoslovakia in the qualifying for the 1980 European Championship , he was in the starting eleven.

Berggren was subsequently unable to build on his goalscoring successes, in the 1979 season he appeared as a five-time goalscorer. In the following years he stayed behind as a goal scorer behind Grönhagen and the young talent Hans Holmqvist . At the end of the 1981 season , in which he had scored three goals, he rose with the club as bottom of the table in the second division. Although the relay win in Division 2 Norra before Gefle IF , he failed in the promotion round with the team at local rivals AIK . After the 1: 2 defeat in the first leg, his goal to equalize 2: 2 in the second leg was too little. A short time later he ended his active career at the club.
