Thomas Sjöberg (born July 6, 1952 in Helsingborg ) is a former Swedish football player . The midfielder , who made his debut for the Swedish national team in 1974 , won the Swedish national championship three times with the Malmö FF . He now works as a trainer.

Career

Sjöberg started playing football at Eskilsminne IF . For the club he ran in the fourth division Division 4 Skåne Nordvästra until he made promotion to the third division at the end of the 1973 season as a season winner in front of the tied Råå IF . He fell on several higher-class clubs and received offers from Helsingborgs IF , IFK Malmö and Malmö FF.

Sjöberg decided in the spring of 1974 to move to Malmö FF, where he immediately belonged to the permanent staff under the newly signed coach Bob Houghton . He also quickly played his way into national coach Georg Ericson's notebook and made his international debut just under six months after he had played in the fourth division. On August 8th of the year he was in the 2-1 victory over the Norwegian national team through goals from his teammate at MFF Staffan Tapper and Eine Fredriksson from GAIS in the starting lineup.

At the end of his debut season, the 1974 season , Sjöberg won the Von Rosens Cup for the Swedish championship title alongside players like Roy Andersson , Krister Kristensson , Jan Möller and Roland Andersson with nine points ahead of runner-up AIK Winning the Svenska Cup after a 2-0 final win over Östers IF in the summer meant the double win . In the following year the title was defended in both competitions, in the league Östers IF was distanced with five points and defeated in the cup final Djurgårdens IF .

Sjöberg made a name for himself outside of Sweden through his appearances in the European Cup and as a regular player for the national team. After the end of the season in 1976 , which he finished with his team as second behind the first-time champions Halmstads BK , he left his home country. The Swede's new club was Karlsruher SC , which played in the Bundesliga at the time . At the beginning of the second half of the season 76/77 , however, he came only to six games, as he could not prevail under coach Carl-Heinz Rühl . Therefore, he returned to Malmö FF after just four months and won his third championship with the team.

In the summer of 1978 Sjöberg was part of the national team for the 1978 World Cup tournament in Argentina . In the opening game of the Swedish team in a 1-1 draw against Brazil, he scored the only tournament goal of the national selection, which was eliminated from the tournament prematurely after defeats against Austria and Spain . After the finals, he left his home country again and moved to Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia . After six months he moved to the Chicago Sting in the North American Soccer League , where he ran up for three months.

For the 1979 season Sjöberg returned to Sweden to Malmö FF. In 1981 he ended his national team career after 45 international matches in which he had scored 14 goals. A year later he left Malmö FF and hired at the lower class playing club Helsingborgs IF , for which he ran up until 1985. He ended his active career at Lunds BK , where the team was looked after by his former teammate Roland Andersson.

After the end of his career, Sjöberg moved to the coaching bench as Roland Andersson's assistant coach. He accompanied him on his engagements with Al-Ittihad, the Qatar Sports Club , BSC Young Boys and Malmö FF. After Andersson was promoted to the assistant coach of Lars Lagerbäck in the national team, Sjöberg took on the role of a match observer. In 2006 they parted ways when Sjöberg returned to Malmö FF as a youth coach. Since 2010 he has worked as a scout for the Nigerian national team.
