The Fotbollsallsvenskan 1979 was the 55th season of the highest Swedish football league . Between April 16 and October 28, 1979, the Swedish championship was played.

Halmstads BK fought a duel with IFK Gothenburg for the Swedish championship title. With one point ahead, HBK was able to get the Von Rosens Cup for the second time since 1976 . In addition to promoted IS Halmia , who was beaten down in the table, Djurgårdens IF , Åtvidabergs FF , Landskrona BoIS , IFK Sundsvall and AIK Solna fought relegation until the last matchday . On the last day of the match, AIK fell to the penultimate place and had to relegate from the first division for the third time in the club's history.
