Mats Werner (born June 1, 1953 ) is a former Swedish football player . The offensive player came to six international appearances in the course of his career and scored one goal.

Career

Werner joined Hammarby IF in 1970 , but had to wait until 1971 for his debut in the Allsvenskan . At first he was only a supplementary player, only after Jan Holmberg became the new coach in 1972, he was used regularly. In the following years he played alongside players like Thomas Dennerby , Ulf Eriksson and Sten-Ove Ramberg . In the summer of 1976 Georg Ericson nominated him for the Swedish national team . He made his first appearance on June 1 of that year in a 2-0 win over Finland . He scored his only international goal in the third international match, a 6-0 win against Finland on August 11th: a penalty in the 59th minute of the game to make it 4-0. After he had played five international matches within the year, he was initially no longer nominated.

In 1977 Werner reached the final of the Svenska Cup with his team . The game against Östers IF ended with a goal from Anders Linderoth with a 0-1 defeat. In the 1979 season , the club signed a new coach, Bengt Gustafsson , who used Werner as a striker after the previous striker Billy Ohlsson had switched to Arminia Bielefeld . He scored 14 goals in the course of the season and thus got the title of Allsvenskan top scorer. As a result, he came on August 15 that year in the 2-0 defeat against Norway as a substitute for another international match.

In the following season Werner could not build on his personal success, as he came due to an injury to only four appearances in which he scored two goals in the league. After he was one of the regulars again in the 1981 season , he was again only able to participate to a limited extent thanks to an injury in the club's best season to date, when the club behind IFK Göteborg was runner-up. In 1984 he ended his career after playing 251 league games for HIF . This makes him one of the three players with the most league appearances for the club.
