The Fotbollsallsvenskan 1961 was the 37th season of the highest Swedish football league . Between April 16 and October 15, 1961, the Swedish champions were played.
Newcomers IF Elfsborg caused a surprise. The newcomer dethroned last year's champions IFK Norrköping and won the Von Rosens Cup for the fourth time 21 years after winning the last title . The relegation places occupied AIK , who was relegated for the second time after 1951 from the first class, and Sandvikens IF .
Since the European Cup season began at the end of August, the leader of the first half of the season (IFK Göteborg) was registered for the 1961/62 European Cup .
