Football has been played in the club since 1903 . Most of the players came from Malmö Velociped Klubb , which was dissolved shortly before. The team was one of the teams that played the Allsvenskan in the first season in 1924 . After relegation had been managed in the first season as third from bottom, the club rose in 1926 for the first time from the first division. However, in the second year of the second division as champions of the Sydsvenska series , the club managed to qualify for the promotion games, where Redbergslids IK were defeated 3-1 in the necessary decider on a neutral place and thus the promotion could be made perfect.

IFK played in the following years again against relegation, before 1932 the season was ended again only on a relegation zone. First, the team played for the return to the House of Lords. In 1936, however, the crash into the third division followed. The rescue bank occupied by IS Halmia was missing two points.

It took IFK two years to return to the second division. The team established itself in the midfield and was able to get involved again in the mid-1940s. 1952 succeeded as the relay winner of Division 2 Sydvästra with seven points ahead of Halmstads BK, the return to the Allsvenskan.

As bottom of the table, IFK Malmö rose directly from the first division again. The direct resurgence was missed as fourth in the table. After the runner-up title behind Norrby IF in 1954 succeeded in the following year after a 2-2 draw and a 1-0 win against IK Brage, the return to the elite series.

In the beginning, the team occupied lower midfield positions, but surprisingly succeeded in the 1960 season runner-up behind IFK Norrköping . A sixth place followed in 1962 when he left the first division.

IFK Malmö currently plays in Division 2 (4th league) in the group Östra Götaland. The greatest international success was reaching the quarter-finals in the European Cup , where they were eliminated against Rapid Vienna .

Historically, IFK Malmö was the middle class football club and Malmö FF was the working class club.
