Örgryte IS , officially Örgryte Idrottssällskap , or Öis for short (ÖIS), is a Swedish sports club from the Örgryte district of Gothenburg , which is best known for its football team . This was several national champions and played for a long time in the highest Swedish football league, the Allsvenskan, and also has departments in athletics , wrestling and bowling . The club was founded in 1887, making it one of the oldest football clubs in Sweden. Örgryte played his first organized soccer game in Sweden against IS Lyckans Soldater ("Soldiers of Happiness") in 1892 and won it 1-0. Many players from back then came from Scotland . Örgryte dominated Swedish football in the early years and became Sweden's first national champion in 1896. Other titles followed in 1897, 1898, 1899, 1902, 1904, 1905, 1906, 1907, 1909 and 1913. Until 1940, Örgryte was a fixture in club football in Sweden with 14 championship titles, but then relegated first to the second division and later even in the third division, where you should stay until the end of the 50s , before players like Agne Simonsson , Gunnar Gren and Rune Börjesson managed to move up to the top division again. Despite many great successes, however, it did not succeed in earning further championship titles.

As part of the football world championship in 1958 , which took place in Sweden, the Gothenburg teams received a new stadium: the old, small Gamla Ullevi was replaced by a new building on a nearby site, the Nya Ullevi . To this day, the home games of Örgryte and IFK Göteborg are played here, but only top games such as city derbies or against teams from Stockholm. Normally, the three classic Gothenburg teams IFK Göteborg , Örgryte IS and GAIS Göteborg have been playing at Gamla Ullevi again since 1992.

In the 1970s, he was relegated again, to the second division, which this time only lasted a few years: In 1981 they played again in the Allsvenskan and in 1985 they won their 15th championship after beating local rivals IFK Göteborg . The master coach was Agne Simonsson . However, the team lost in the first round of the European championship championship against the GDR champions BFC Dynamo .

The next title followed in 2000 when they won the Swedish Cup. The big star was striker Marcus Allbäck , who u. a. Top scorer in the league in 1999. The best season in the league since 1985 followed in 2002 when Örgryte was third with Afonso Alves as the team's star and crowd favorite. Particular highlights were the games against IFK Göteborg, which were won 2-1 and 5-2.

The 2006 season ended with relegation as bottom of the table. One of the few highlights of the season was the derby win against IFK Göteborg 3-2. 2007 to 2008 played Örgryte in the Superettan , the second division in Sweden. Meanwhile back in the Allsvenskan, Örgryte IS rose again at the end of the 2009 season in the Superettan. At the beginning of 2011, after the bankruptcy, the forced relegation to the third class followed.

After a convincing season in Division 1 Södra, the club rose to the Superettan in 2012.

The club is known as an association of Gothenburg high society, but has never achieved mass popularity since the 1950s. He is known for his technical game. There are often Brazilian players on the team as the club has a partnership with the Brazilian club Atlético Mineiro . The most successful players from Brazil so far are Afonso Alves and Paulinho . Örgryte IS struggled with economic problems for many years, as the local rival IFK in particular had come to the fore over the years. In the meantime, the men's team has been outsourced to a stock corporation trading under the name Örgryte IS Fotboll AB . However, neither the club nor the stock corporation could stop the economic and sporting decline. In autumn 2007 the idea of ​​merging Örgryte IS, GAIS and BK Häcken came up. After protests by supporters, the idea of ​​a new Gothenburg football club under the name FC Gothia was quickly withdrawn by the club presidents. 2009 meanwhile again first class the club got its financial problems under control after the direct relegation. On February 11, 2011, the company finally filed for bankruptcy.

Örgryte IS first played on Balders Hage before the club moved to Valhalla idrottsplats in 1908 . Later on, the club also used Gamla Ullevi and Ullevi as a venue for home games. In 2007, the club returned for its second division games in the Valhalla idrottsplats, as the renovation of Gamla Ullevi began at that time. After the modernization work was over, he moved back to Gamla Ullevi in ​​2009.

The attendance record of 52,194 visitors was set in 1959 for a game against IFK Göteborg . At Gamla Ullevi this record is 31,597 spectators against IF Elfsborg in 1957.
