Christian Olsson (actually John Christian Bert Olsson ; born January 25, 1980 in Gothenburg ) is a former Swedish triple jumper . He was Olympic champion , world champion and two European champions.

Life

Olsson began his athletics career as a high jumper and was in this discipline 1999 Junior European Champion with 2.21 m. At the age of 15, he saw the British triple jumper Jonathan Edwards jump with a world record of 18.29 m at the 1995 World Championships in his hometown Gothenburg , and that is how he began his love for this jumping discipline, in which he also became Junior European Champion in 1999.

His breakthrough as a triple jumper came in 2001 at the World Championships in Edmonton , when he jumped over 17 meters for the first time and won the silver medal. At the European Championships in Munich in 2002 he was able to defeat his great role model Edwards for the first time and win the title. At the 2003 World Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis, he won superior gold.

With 17.83 m he achieved an indoor world record at the World Indoor Championships in Budapest in 2004 , which he held until 2010. Before the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, he was considered the big favorite for gold. Olsson lived up to expectations and won the competition with his personal best of 17.79 m. He was able to achieve another season goal on September 12, 2004 by winning the last Golden League competition at the ISTAF in Berlin and thus sharing the jackpot with the 400-meter runner Tonique Williams-Darling from the Bahamas. His profit was $ 500,000.

Because of a foot injury and a necessary operation in March 2005, he was unable to take part in the World Championships in Helsinki and thus could not defend his title. The following year he won the gold medal at the 2006 European Championships in his hometown of Gothenburg. With a width of 17.67 m and a lead of 46 centimeters over the runner-up, Olsson confidently defended the European championship title.

Due to a muscle injury, Olsson canceled his start at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and decided not to defend his title. On May 14, 2012, Olsson announced his retirement from competitive sports after six operations and ongoing problems with his right foot.

Olsson was voted Europe's Athlete of the Year in 2003 and 2004 . He started for the Swedish club Örgryte IS and has been coached by Yannick Tregaro since 1999 . He has lived in Monte Carlo since 2002 and was 1.92 m tall and had a competition weight of around 74 kg.
