Nazim Tahir oğlu Babayev (born October 8, 1997 in Baku ) is an Azerbaijani athlete who specializes in the triple jump . His greatest sporting success to date is his victory at the 2019 European Indoor Championships in Glasgow.

Athletic career

Nazim Babayev has participated in international championships since 2013. After winning the national championships, he won gold at the European Summer Youth Olympic Festival in Utrecht with a personal best of 15.53 m. In 2014 he took part in the second Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing. With a width of 15.96 m he won the bronze medal. In 2015 he took part in international adult titles for the first time, for example at the European Indoor Championships in Prague. There he failed in the qualification and ended up in 17th place in the end. Later that year in the open air he won the gold medal at the U20 European Championships in Eskilstuna with a personal best of 17.04 m. Before that, he also won the gold medal at the first ever European Games in his home country, but only the athletics nations from the so-called third division competed there in the European Team Championship .

In 2016, Babayev took part in the World Indoor Championships in Portland. There he was eighth with a width of 16.43 m. In the rest of the year he couldn't get any top placements. At the U20 World Championships , the European Championships and the Olympic Games , he failed in the qualification, with distances well below his best performance from 2015. In 2017 he improved to 17.18 m at the U23 European Championships , which is still his best distance in the Mean outdoors. At the World Championships he stayed well below this distance and could not qualify for the final, which ended up in 14th place.

He finished fourth at the European Championships in Berlin 2018. With the victory at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow in 2019, he not only achieved his greatest sporting success to date, but also set his new personal best with 17.29 m. In summer he appeared again at the U23 European Championships . There he could not defend his title and in the end won the silver medal with 17.03 m. At the World Championships in Doha, he failed with 16.65 m in qualification.

In addition to his titles of international championships, Babyev became a Universiade winner in 2017 and 2019 . He studies at the Azerbaijan State of Physical Culture and Sports Academy in Baku .
