Māris Bružiks

Māris Bružiks (born August 25, 1962 in Pļaviņas , Latvian SSR ) is a former Latvian athlete who specialized in the triple jump . Until Latvia gained independence in 1990, he represented the Soviet Union internationally . At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, he was a member of the coaching staff of the Latvian women's national basketball team.

Career

Bružiks was the European indoor triple jump champion in Madrid in 1986. In the same year he won the outdoor silver medal at the European Athletics Championships in Stuttgart behind the eventual world and Olympic champion Christo Markow from Bulgaria.

In 1987 Bružiks was seventh at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Indianapolis and third at the Universiade in Zagreb. At the Olympic Games in 1992 , now starting for Latvia, he finished tenth. He won the silver medal behind Frenchman Pierre Camara at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Toronto in 1993 and the bronze medal behind Denis Kapustin from Russia and Serge Hélan from France at the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1994 . He finished the World Athletics Championships in Gothenburg in 1995 in tenth place, before becoming European Indoor Champion again in Stockholm in 1996, ten years after his last title win. At the World Athletics Championships in Athens in 1997 , he could no longer qualify for the final.
