Carol Corbu (born February 8, 1946 in Văleni-Podgoria , Argeș County ) is a former Romanian triple jumper . He won two medals at European championships and five medals at European indoor championships.

Career

Corbu jumped in 1969 at the still unofficial European Indoor Championships, the European Indoor Games in Belgrade , 16.20 m and thus took third place behind Mikalaj Dudkin from the Soviet Union and the Hungarian Zoltan Cziffra . In the 1969 outdoor season he won the first of eight Romanian championship titles in the triple jump, and in 1975 he also won the long jump. At the European Open Air Championships in Athens in 1969 , Corbu jumped 16.56 m with wind support and took fourth place behind Viktor Saneyev from the Soviet Union, the Hungarian Cziffra and Klaus Neumann from the GDR. In 1970 the first official European Indoor Championships took place in Vienna , with Corbu taking sixth place with 16.35 m.

In 1971, at the European Indoor Championships in Sofia , Viktor Saneyev and Carl Corbu both jumped 16.83 m, Saneyev received the gold medal because each of his other five attempts was further than Corbu's second best jump. At the European Open Air Championships in Helsinki in 1971 Jörg Drehmel from the GDR won, behind Sanejew Corbu took third place with 16.87 m. As in the previous year, Corbu received the silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in Grenoble in 1972 , with 16.89 m he was eight centimeters behind Saneyev. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , Saneyev won his second gold medal after 1968; behind Jörg Drehmel and the Brazilian Nelson Prudencio , Corbu took fourth place with 16.85 m. Corbu won his only international gold medal at the 1973 European Indoor Championships in Rotterdam . With 16.80 m he had five centimeters ahead of the Pole Michał Joachimowski .

At the European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg in 1974 , Corbu did not go to the triple jump after tenth place in the long jump competition. At the European Open Air Championships in Rome in 1974 , Corbu was 55 centimeters behind Wiktor Saneyev with 16.68 m, but won the silver medal in front of Andrzej Sontag from Poland , and Drehel and Joachimowski finished fourth and fifth. As in the previous year in Göteborg, Corbu remained without a medal at the European Indoor Championships in Kattowitz in 1975 : with 16.66 m he was fourth in the triple jump, the day after he reached fifth place in the long jump with 7.64 m. At the Indoor-Indoor European Championships in Munich Corbu managed to jump to the silver medal with 16.75 m behind Viktor Saneyev, who, however, had a considerable lead with 17.10 m. In the outdoor season, Saneev won his third gold medal at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , Corbu finished eighth in Montreal with 16.43 m. At the end of his career, Corbu achieved fourth place at the 1978 European Indoor Championships in Milan with 16.41 m, and at the 1978 Open Air European Championships in Prague , he took 14th place with 16.02 m.

At a height of 1.97 m, Corbu had a competition weight of 85 kg.
