The 27th European Indoor Athletics Championships took place from March 1st to 3rd, 2002 in the Ferry-Dusika-Hallenstadion in Vienna . The Austrian capital was the venue for this event for the third time since 1970 and 1979.

Two world records were set during the competitions: by Jolanda Čeplak in the 800 meter run and by Svetlana Feofanowa in the pole vault . In total, the athletes in Vienna set 48 national records and seven championship records.
