André Bucher (born October 19, 1976 in Neudorf ) is a former Swiss middle-distance runner who became world champion in the 800-meter run in 2001 . Until 2017 he was the last world champion from Europe in this discipline.

The primary school teacher, who is 1.86 m tall and weighs 75 kg, started for the LR Beromünster. In 2000 and 2001 he was Swiss Sportsman of the Year and European Athlete of the Year 2001. After that, Bucher was repeatedly slowed down by injuries. After a one-year break from competition, he announced his retirement from top-class sport on May 11, 2007 after health problems recurred during the preparation for the season.

After studying economics with a focus on marketing , Bucher started working at Migros in the sponsoring department in autumn 2009 . From 2012 to 2013 he was the cantonal representative for the promotion of young talent in the Sports Office of the Canton of Zurich. In 2013, he and his colleague Dominik Meier founded Allaleen AG, which specializes in brand development. In March 2014 the company founded zakawatch.ch, a retail brand for watches. In 2015, zakawatch.ch opened a store in Lucerne. Bucher has 3 children.

successes

At the 2000 Olympic Games, André Bucher may have been robbed of a medal because he was jostled by Andrea Longo and the outcome of the race was very close. The Italian was later disqualified for this. Bucher celebrated his greatest successes a year later when, in addition to the world championship title, he was also able to win five Golden League meetings (and thus part of the jackpot) and the IAAF Grand Prix Final .

Personal best

In his special discipline of 800 meters, Bucher achieved his personal best in August 2001, a time that had only been undercut by four runners until then. Several better times were later stopped, with Bucher still among the fifteen fastest runners in this discipline (as of July 2018).
