Svetlana Evgenevna Feofanova
Svetlana Evgenjewna Feofanova ( Russian Светлана Евгеньевна Феофанова , English transcription Svetlana Feofanova ; born July 16, 1980 in Moscow ) is a former Russian pole vaulter . She was world champion in 2003 and European champion in 2002 and 2010.
Life
She started her sport when she was 17. Before that, she was an artistic gymnast and was a member of the reserve of the Russian Olympic team for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta .
Her first major international appearance was at the 2001 World Indoor Championships in Lisbon , when she won silver behind Czech Pavla Hamáčková with 4.51 m . At the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton , she became a major opponent of the then leading pole vaulter Stacy Dragila (USA) during the competition . Ultimately, she won the silver medal in Edmonton.
In 2002 she won the title both at the European Indoor Championships in Vienna and outdoors at the European Championships in Munich . In March 2003 she won the Indoor World Championships in Birmingham with 4.80 m in front of her compatriot Jelena Issinbajewa , who crossed 4.60 m. At the 2003 World Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis , she won the gold medal with 4.75 m ahead of Annika Becker (GER) and Issinbajewa.
The 2004 season went down in the history of the women's pole vault as the season of her duel with her compatriot Issinbayeva. They drove each other from one world record height to the next. The grand finale of the season took place at the Olympic Games in Athens . When Issinbayeva had failed attempts at 4.70 m and 4.75 m, the way to the gold medal seemed clear for Feofanova. Up to 4.75 m she did not have a single failed attempt. But with the third attempt over 4.80 m, Issinbayeva broke the knot. Feofanowa stayed at 4.75 m and won the silver medal, while Isinbayeva increased the world record to 4.91 m without further attempts.
Her personal best is 4.88 m. It reached this height in Heraklion in 2004 , which was a world record at the time. At the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005 , she was unable to participate due to an injury and therefore could not defend her title. At the 2006 World Indoor Championships in Moscow , she made a successful comeback and won the bronze medal. At the European Championships in Gothenburg in 2006 , she was fourth and was only third-best Russian. Gold was won by Isinbajewa, Polish Monika Pyrek won silver and Tatjana Polnowa won bronze .
In the absence of Isinbayeva Svetlana Feofanova won gold at the European Indoor Championships 2007 in Birmingham . At the 2007 World Championships in Osaka , she won bronze with 4.75 m behind Issinbajewa and Kateřina Baďurová (CZE). At the Olympic Games in Beijing she managed to win the bronze medal again with a jumped height of 4.75 m behind Issinbayeva (5.05 m - world record) and Jennifer Stuczynski (USA), who jumped 4.80 m.
Feofanova won the silver medal at the 2010 World Indoor Championships in Doha . In Barcelona she won the same year at the European Championships in Barcelona with a height of 4.75 m after 2002, the second European Championship gold in front of the two Germans Silke Spiegelburg and Lisa Ryzih , who both mastered 4.65 m.
In the final of the World Championships 2011 in Daegu she reached third place and thus the bronze medal. She was beaten by the world champion Fabiana Murer and the German Martina Strutz . Here, too, she managed a height of 4.75 m. With this she won eight international medals from 2001 to 2011, six of which reached a height of 4.75 m. In London she broke a triple foot in qualifying at the 2012 Olympic Games .
