The 16th IAAF World Indoor Championships took place March 17-20, 2016 in Portland , Oregon , United States .

The US city was awarded the IAAF in 2013 . The only competitor was Birmingham , which was also designated as the venue for the 2018 World Indoor Championships .

The competitions were held at the Oregon Convention Center , which holds 8,400 spectators.

Due to the suspension of the All-Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF) by the IAAF in November 2015, all Russian athletes were excluded from participating in the championships. What was new in the regulations was that there was no qualification in the jumping disciplines or the shot put. In the long jump, triple jump and shot put, the finals started with 16 participants and not with 12 athletes as is usual. The top eight had a fourth and fifth attempt after the third attempt. Then only the top four were given a further sixth attempt.
