Ruswahl Samaai (born September 25, 1991 in Paarl ) is a South African long jumper .

Athletic career

Ruswahl Samaai gained his first international experience at the Commonwealth Games 2014 in Glasgow , where he won the bronze medal with 8.08 m. He then won bronze at the African Championships in Marrakech with 7.84 m. In 2015 he qualified for the World Championships in Beijing and was eliminated there with 7.79 m in the qualification . In 2016 he took part in the World Indoor Championships in Portland , where he finished fifth with a new South African indoor record of 8.18 m. At the African Championships in Durban , he won with a wind- assisted 8.40 m ahead of his compatriot Luvo Manyonga . He also qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where he finished ninth with 7.97 m in the final .

In 2017 he won the bronze medal behind Manyonga and the American Jarrion Lawson at the World Championships in London with 8.32 m in the final . In 2018 he again took part in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast , where he also won the bronze medal with 8.22 m. At the beginning of August he won the gold medal at the African Championships in Asaba with a new championship record of 8.45 m in front of Manyonga and the Moroccan Yahya Berrabah .

In 2015 and 2016, Samaai became the South African champion in the long jump.
