final
August 5, 2017, 8:05 p.m. local time (9:05 p.m. CEST )
There wasn't a distinctly single favorite here. The medal candidates included the US Olympic champion from 2016 Jeff Henderson, the Olympic runner-up Luvo Manyonga from South Africa, the world champion from 2013 starting under a neutral flag Alexander Menkow, the Australian runner-up world champion from 2015 Fabrice Lapierre, the Chinese world championship third from 2015 and Olympic fifth from 2016 Wang Jianan and the 2016 Olympic champion Jarrion Lawson from the USA.
From the beginning, the long jump developed into an exciting competition. Lawson took the lead after the first round with 8.37 m, ahead of Menkow with 8.27 m. With just one centimeter behind Menkow, the South African Rushwal Samaai followed in third place. In lap two Manyonga reached 8.48 m, which he now took the lead. Lawson stayed second but improved to 8.43 m. Jianan jumped 8.23 m and was fifth behind Samaai and Menkow. In round three, too, there were good widths, especially through Lawson with 8.40 m and Manyonga with 8.38 m, but no improvements.
In the fifth test series, the Cuban Maykel Massó with his 8.26 m pushed Jianan from fifth place. Once again the last round was tough. Jarrion Lawson was only three centimeters behind the new world champion Luvo Manyonga with his 8.44 m. Rushwal Samaai rose to 8.32 m and won the bronze medal. Alexander Menkow, who was previously in third place, finally finished fourth with his 8.27 m from lap one. Maykel Massó kept his fifth place. The Chinese Shi Yuhao drew even with his compatriot Wang Jianan after his 8.23 m. Yuhao finished sixth in the final ranking due to his second best attempt. Behind Jianan, the Swede Michel Tornéus finished eighth with 8.18 m from round one.
