The men's long jump at the 1997 World Athletics Championships was held on August 3 and 5, 1997 in the Olympic Stadium in the Greek capital, Athens .
World champion was the Cuban defending champion Iván Pedroso , who won gold at the 1995 Pan-American Games and bronze in 1991 . Second place went to the American Erick Walder . Bronze went to the Russian Kirill Sossunow .

qualification
August 3, 1997, 8:20 a.m.
39 participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 8.05 m. Four athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the eight athletes placed next to twelve jumpers (highlighted in light green). So finally 7.93 m had to be achieved for the final. Another athlete, like the participant, had achieved 7.93 m in twelfth place, but was classified in thirteenth place after applying the rule for further differentiation via the second best attempt and could not take part in the final.

The 1995 vice world champion James Beckford finished fourth
Maurice Wignall, also active as a hurdler , failed to make a valid jump in the final after having achieved 8.12 m in qualifying two days earlier
