The shot put men at the 1997 World Championships in Athletics was on August 2, 1997 at the Olympic Stadium of the Greek capital Athens held.

The putter of the United States won two medals in this competition with gold and bronze. World champion was the defending champion and Olympic runner-up in 1996, John Godina . He won ahead of the German Oliver-Sven Buder . Bronze went to Cottrell J. Hunter .

doping

There was a doping case in this competition.

The first Ukrainian Oleksandr Bahatsch was convicted of doping abuse with ephedrine and disqualified.

The following three athletes were primarily disadvantaged:

  • John Godina , USA - It was a few days late to receive his gold medal.
  • Cottrell J. Hunter , USA - He was absent from the awards ceremony and was late in receiving his bronze medal.
  • Michael Mertens , Germany - In eighth place in the final, he would have been allowed three more attempts.
  • Manuel Martínez , Spain - He should have taken part in the final as twelfth placed in the qualification over his distance.

33 participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 19.80 m. Eleven athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the next placed athlete to twelve shot putters (highlighted in light green). So finally 19.71 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
